I am getting ready to do a fresh install of XP so I was going to back up my files on DVD. When I try to use the built in program with windows it tells me "please insert a blank CD" so it does not recognize the blank DVD.

I also tried using IMGBURN software program but can't figure that one out either. Can someone possibly give me a step by step guide on how to back up primarily data files to DVD. My operating system is XP Home. Thank you.

Do you have Nero installed? Nero Backitup will do it and is part of the Nero suite.

Use this program to burn data to DVD.

Don't use the built in Windows burning program. The link I provided has a guide as well. The software is free to use.

Going a bit OFF TOPIC. By the way you didn't answer my question in your other post, do you have a PIONEER 110D that you crossflashed to PIONEER 111L? Others are curious as to what PIONEER drive you actually bought. Remove the drive from your pc and look at the sticker for the model number.

Richard_G thank you for the advice, I do have Nero but prefer not to use it, takes up too much space on hard drive.

You should remember that DVDs can have a really short half-life; and you need to burn & verify files unless it is specifically a RAM disc, and even then... +Rs are made primarily for home movie use where a little flaw or two goes unnoticed, and cheaper ones are the worst.

At least test what you burn before deleting anything. Given how cheap HDs have gotten, I think I'd clone the drive- its a lot easier!:]

ahhaa thank you for the advice. I would just copy the whole drive except I think I may have either spyware or virus problems and I don't want to carry them over into my new install of windows, make sense? The files on dvd are virus free and will be put right back on my hd immediately. Thank you again for taking time to reply.

You should be able to select the files you want to burn using "Build" mode in ImgBurn. There's a guide here: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1779

Look just at the first 2 screenshots. Get into "Build" mode (first screenshot) then select the various files you want to burn using the "select file" icon (magnifying glass & document) - sorry, I don't have IB loaded on this computer. Use the "Information" tab on the right side to monitor the amount of space on the disc you'll be using, when full or you have all the files loaded you want, burn.

It's really that easy - I've done this several times for individual file burning.
