Hope this is the right spot for this, if not please advise.

I have a problem with playing back raw video format, and no problem playing WDM format (compressedvideo). What can I dissable in my "start up" programs, to help this? I run Windows XP w/sp1a.

I do NOT want to dissable anything that would stop my system from being "retoration" if need to. The only Norton I use, is Norton Ghost. Thanks - Andy

Almost nothing. Uncompressed video is difficult for even fast machines. But, as you said, compress a copy to xvid and flies.

Your computer is better than mine(with twice the RAM) and I have absolutely zero problems capturing, editing or playing uncompressed video.
Clean that thing out. Get rid of software you don't use, run some cleaners(CrapCleaner - aka CCleaner), get a registry cleaner and defrag your hard drive(s).
I also cleaned out my startup apps a while ago....and Norton Ghost is still in my startup though I've read it isn't necessary. I also have Norton AV...always have.

There is also msconfig . Type that in a 'Run...' window. You can selectively disable drivers, etc. It's just temporary and they will all come back with a reboot. Start with the Diagnostic Startup. That should give you just the basic drivers and services. If that helps, then you can try disabling any suspected drivers or services. It will also give you a list of your startup programs. The program has a 'Help' file I would read before using.

Just my personal opinion, but I would install SP2 or at least make sure your video drivers and motherboard drivers are all up to date.
