If they are commercial discs, then the player is faulty. If they are copies, then you have bad discs. Most likely cheap media, or a media that the player doesn't like.

The disc are Verbatim 16xDVD-r
I have had very good luck with the disc in the past, do you think I need to change? -
You can try looking up your player in the DVD Players section and see what brand/types of media other have had success using.
Other than that, I would try a different brand/type of media. Verbatim are usually reliable, so it could be you have/had a bad spindle. It is also possible your player is at fault. The laser loses power with age/use and the first discs to suffer are recordable discs.Google is your Friend
