    my my cd/dvd rom does not read any discs ( store bought, nor home backups).......winxp does recognize the drive, but for some reason neither cds nor dvds are being read. upon loading the tray with the disc, the led does blink.......and thats it.

    Sounds like the drive might have died. Does it spin up when you put a disc in?

    This same thing happened to my NEC 2510. The laser is out, time for a new drive.

    Have you tried cleaning the laser lens with a cleaner disc?

    1a.Go to Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager->DVD/CD-ROM Drives and disable the drive.Reboot and enable it.
    1b.In Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers uninstall the secondary channel and reboot.
    2.Use IsoBuster to see if it can read the discs.
    3.Uninstall Nero InCD(if installed).
