After upgrading to version X from version U, ffmpegX insisted on reinstalling the binaries every time I started the app. I posted for help and no one answered. Major's readme says you don't need to upgrade your binaries, but I had bookmarked SourceForges' download page, so I went back to look again.

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=62947&package_id=70503&release_id=162732
    is the link.

There is a later version of the binaries for mplayer and mencoder than I had, and they were accepted, BUT, I have a ppc G4, and ffmpegX keeps asking for the Intel version of mpeg2enc even though it obviously won't work.

The workaround is to do 2 binary installs for mpeg2enc, one for the ppc version so that part works and then install the Intel version just so the app will leave you alone.

And don't forget to get the Real library components from the same SourceForge page to copy manually to the Library>ApplicationSupport>ffmegX folder if you want those to work.

When I try to install the binaries I enter my Mac OS X password and get: ##Password:
stewartwells is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

    Any ideas?

No, the new mpeg2enc is Universal and will work also on PPC.

Check if your OSX account is of administrator type?

Yeah, Darwin 'reported' me plenty of times before I learned that you can't sudo from a "Standard" OS X account, unless you open a terminal and 'sudo tcsh'.

You must be logged in to an admin account to do the install. The installer uses the sudo command.

I've tried logging into the admin account and installing the mpeg2enc, which it does but, when I restart the program it asks for it again. Then when I log back into my user account it asks for it but still does the sudo thing.

    Any ideas?

Try repairing permissions too using Disk Utility as sometimes that can fix some problems.

Ack, I suddenly got this problem as well!!!

ffmpegX kept asking for the last two binaries every time I re-launched the app.

Then I remembered the most recent change I performed on my system was running a free utility called Monolingual - it removes languages and Intel/PowerPC components that your system configuration doesn't need - it must have removed some code fragments from ffmpegX as well.

I launched ffmpegX from an old backup and installed the binaries again and relaunched the app.

And that seems to have fixed it!
