  1. I have a avi file that is about an hour long. I just want a scene from the file that is about 5 minutes long. I re-encode the original avi file using xvid and a mp3 codec. My problem is that I can't get Tmpgenc to encode the audio in VBR. Tmpgenc only encodes it in CBR. Any ideas how to get VBR audio to work? I have Xvid and Lame installed.

If you are using TMPGEnc encoder for Xvids, it's really not that good at that proceedure. It was made to be a MPEG encoder. I would use a program that is made for AVI encoding. VirtualDub would be my first choice. If you want a all in one type converter, AutoGK, avi.Net or FairUse Wizard are three popular ones. But they will all use the very same Xvid codec. VD is a little harder to learn, but much more flexible. And it does a lot more than just edit.

And I wouldn't encode any AVI audio in VBR format. It's acceptable for helping to crunch down the size of a Xvid for sending over the net, but useless for much of anything else. It causes lots of sync problems if you need to re-encode the video to a different format later. For the few KB you save on audio file size, you just generate many more problems for everything else. I would stick to MP3 CBR.

VD can easily chop out a small clip from your AVI, and you don't need to re-encode it, if the format it's using is the one you want. You save it out as 'Direct stream copy'. Only takes a few seconds. VD can also use LAME MP3 as a audio codec.

  3. Thanks. I'll give VD a try. Sounds pretty good. Thanks for all the information. Very helpful.
