  2. Did you want just to retain the scene, or the whole DVD minus the scene?

autogk is an easy way to go DVD=>.avi

Then you can open up your .avi in virtualdub or avidemux, use direct stream copy for audio & video, and the mark in/mark out function to denote the cut areas (make sure you use keyframes) and delete

If you just wanted the small scene, it would be easier to cut it out with mpg2cut2, then encode that small scene with either virtualdub or avidemux

dvdshrink. use it in reauthor mode. once you drag the main movie to the left pane use the clip function |<-->| to select the portion you want and shrink will cut it out and make it into a video_ts folder with vobs. from there you can convert it to mpeg2 or anything else you want.

i tried something else i dloaded the normal virtual dub not the mod version opened the avi file i then get a message saying VBR audio detected may encounter sync errors when when proccessing audio in direct stream copy, so i cut out the scene and used full prossessing mode for video and audio and this time it was in sync the only prob is that the file came out at 4gb!! why so big when i prossessed it direct stream it came out at 35mb?

Beacuse in full processing mode, you have to select output video and audio codec. What you've done was to save out as uncompressed.
But if I was you, I'd back up to the AutoGK stage, and make sure you select CBR audio for your DVD to AVI conversion. That way, you can cut and save out in Direct Stream mode without any sync problems, and don't have to reencode yet again (as you have to do when saving out using Full processing) and reduce quality further.

Yes. VBR audio in AVI is always bad news, and should be avoided like the plague.

You can use VirtualDUB MOD, for MPEG files. Open the VOB file containing the scene you want and use VirtualDUB to cut everything before and after the scene.

You will need to compress the MPEG video source to something else, e.g. xvid, and the audio to CBR MP3. You could leave the audio untouched, i.e. run audio in direct stream copy, it's MPEG audio anyhow.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
