  1. I am new to this whole thing but was wondering if I'm doing something wrong. I took a 15 min video last week and tried to make a vcd out of it. It took about 2 hours to convert it to a MPEG-1 file and then about 30 minutes to burn the cd. I am using ulead to do the conversion and Nero to burn the cd. Nero also had to encode the file to make it a vcd.
My question , does this time sound like what everyone else is getting (Compaq 800 mhzt, 128 meg ram computer) or am I not doing it correctly or is there something that can be done to speed up this process. Also the file size was about 180 meg... Does this sound about right.

  2. It's quite a norm for software encoding. But faster PC might help shortening the encoding time.

If it's a concern, you might need special hardware for realtime encoding.

  3. thanks....how much faster could i get if I had faster cpu...just curious because I'm thinking about getting different computer... Any timings would be appreciated.

VCDFREAK - what kind of hardware are you talking about....

  4. Conversion time sounds about right. Check the guides for proper bitrates etc. Don't let Nero reencode, you can turn off VCD standard compliance. 180mb is correct.

  5. The fastest system I can see so far is of dual Athlon Xp system. This claim is supported by the following reviews:

    http://www.tbreak.com/hard/mobo/msi_dualamd/page9.html

    http://www.gamepc.com/reviews/hardware_review.asp?review=asus760mpx&page=7&mscssid=&tp=

Someone might argue that TMPGEnc might take advantage of the SSE2 instructions only can be found in P4. But so far I still cannot a solid proof for such claim.

Someone claims that Athlon XP 1800+ systems require only 2X the video length to convert. I am not sure about this as I might be getting a new system to prove this myself.

I might also get a hardware realtime encoder. Still reading reviews on these.

    Hope this helps.

  6. thanks for all the info...

Martok....You said don't let Nero do the enocding. I am not sure I understand. If I convert this to MPEG-1 , I remember the option you are talking about but if Nero doesn't do the encoding how will it get to VCD format...
