  1. Is is ALWAYS safe to set DVD Decrypter to burn at MAX, even if it choses a faster speed than the media indicates? I have Maxell DVD+R rated at 8x but DVD Decrypter always indicates 12x. I would be using the burned media in a stand alone DVD player.

I set speed myself. Some dirves let some discs go faster than the rating. In general, stick to the rating, go no faster.

The only exception I would do is YUDEN DVD+R, go ahead and burn than 8x disc at a 12x speed, if you want. Turns out fine in most burners.

Sometimes you may want to even go slower (MCC 16x media, for example, may yield better results at 8x or 12x).

  4. Whether 8x or 16x media,I always burn at 4x because it gives a better quality disc (Low PIE and PIF)

Yep!! I always set my burn speed manually, and never go over the speed limit listed on the media.
What's the hurry ?? even from 8X to 12X you are saving what ?? a minute or two tops

And even on faster media i still burn at 8X, except DL's which my burner will allow me to burn them up to around 8-12X yet i won't even DARE burn them over the 2.4X rated speed.

Even at $2.00 a pop on sale, i can walk away or do something else on my machines and wait 30 minutes for it to finish burning 8)

    This was incorrect.

I used mostly 8x certified media and 4x burn speed was optimal. After having done a little testing with 16x media I found that an 8x burn is optimal.

Usually burn at half the media's certified speed and you will have good results. If you have a drive that can give DVD+/-R/W quality scans then test for yourself to find the best write speed for your specific media.

Jees,I learn more everytime I start up my PC.My brain is becoming the size of a watermelon.
