  1. I need to compress files for a web site
I want to use the compression which is compatibatible with the most of the users with default instalations of windows or mac OS

So, in short, there must be good compression cause the file will be downloaded over the net, but cause it's widely used site, the files should be easily playable on any system without need of installing additional codecs or something...

    You've got some conflicting requirements:

Most compatible (for Macs & PCs together) is: Uncompressed, DV, MPEG4, MPEG1, DivX/Xvid, Cinepak, Indeo--or Flash

    Very net-compressable: MPEG4, DivX/Xvid, Flash
Unfortunately, ALL those require downloads for codecs/players.

The ones that don't are not as net-efficient.
Your best compromise would probably be MPEG1, but maybe you'll give us your priorities and we can fine tune...

Yeah, I would agree. If you don't care too much about Macs (like, not worried at all about pre-OSX), then WMV is probably the best for quality-per-filesize-with PC compatibility (and little downloads).

If you don't mind the codec downloads, Flash might be good (but you'd need a $$ 3rd party encoder to do it right).

For almost UNIVERSAL compatibility, with no downloads, but sacrificing compression size efficiency, I'd say MPEG1.
