I want to back-up DVDs. I usually use smart-ripper to obtain the VOBs.
Long story short, I ran into problems with the last 2 DVDs to be converted
and have the VOBs to work with.
I am going the way of Virtualdub to make the DV avi's then TMPG to encode,
and TMPG author to......author.
However, these bit calculators are used for one huge file (i.e. the full movie) correct?
Need I join the avi's before encoding or is there a way to calculate the bitrates
of seperate files. I'd rather encode 1 or 2 avi's at a time than one huge file.
I need to shoot for roughly 1 gig per m2v + the audio for the first DVD I'm
currently working on (5 VOBs, the fifth being about half a gig).
Is there an astronomical mathematical algorithm to do this or is creating a huge
avi the way I must go?

I'm not sure what you are trying to do, but just add the total running time of all the videos to arrive at the bitrate needed for the size of the DVD and use that same bitrate for each video. Let your authoring program 'join' them.
If you are backing up DVDs, I'm not clear where Virtualdub would be involved. Are you converting the VOBs to AVI, then back to MPEG? If so, you will have some quality loss.

I want to learn how to do it 'old school'. I usually use smart-ripper then dvd2dvd, sit back for 12 hours and let it pop out an MPEG.
I never used a bit calculator before and I wasn't sure if the bitrate I was getting was for one huge file or what. -
If you want to convert a DVD-9 to a DVD-5 with individual programs, you might start here: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=224833 It might give you some ideas.
For a DVD, I would use VOB2MPG to convert the DVD to a single MPEG-2. Then you could re-encode it to a lower bitrate with a MPEG encoder. (Using a bitrate calculator to set a bitrate to reduce the file to about 4GB). Then you would author that to DVD and burn. You might look into DVD Rebuilder, as it does all this a little easier.
If you were creating a DVD from video files, you would encode the video and audio to DVD specs. (See 'What is' DVD' to the upper left for them.) Then you would author the encoded video to DVD and burn.
There are a lot of ways to do both conversions. It depends on the software you have. You can do it all in freeware if you like, but some of the pay programs make it easier and faster.
By all means, experiment a little. That's the easiest way to learn video conversions. Refer to our guides when you get stuck or ask questions here. -
Morning everyone.
I am going the way of Virtualdub to make the DV avi's then TMPG to encode,
and TMPG author to......author.
You are doing it like this:
1 - Smartripper: Ripping the dvd title to HDD, hense your .VOBs
2 - VirtualDUB: pre-processing .VOS's each to a *new* AVI source file (ie, dv.avi)
3 - TMPGenc: you are encoding this new dv.avi source file to MPEG-2
If this is the case, and since you are comfortable w/ vdub, then what you could do
is a little something like this:
1 - Smartripper: Rip dvd title to HDD
1a - DGIndex: feed each .VOB and create separate project (ie, .d2v)
1b - VFAPIConv.exe: open each .d2v file and create pseudo xxVFAPI.AVI
2a - VirtualDUB: frameserve xxVFAPI.AVI into 3, TMPGenc, or
2b - xxVFAPI.AVI: go to 3
3 - TMPGenc: open your source file and encode to MPEG-2
You could also use AVIsynth instead, through scripting, but it does require a
little more work in terms of scripting instructions. But, you could create
simple scripts that can serve as your master profile for your source if they
are the same throughout all your projects. (after your first couple of scripts,
the rest will come easier to you - scripting wise)
(I still use vdub a lot too)
Question.. are your dvd titles movies or something else ??
