Are we talking about an original or a dvdr ????
If its a dvdr, and what dvdr ?, then we may be talking about a crappy disc/recording. -
As it seems that neither your computer or one of your players can read it, then you have faulty disc. Return it.
-
My problem is exactly similar. The DVDs we are talking about are playing fine on standalone players. But would show up as not being present (no DVD_Video files or directories) in a computer.
So what is the enigma???
-
didnt use iso buster, i did try with nero and a few others but nothing i tried even recognised that there was a dvd in the drive.
-
Also try DVDFab Decrypter.
BTW...can you read other DVD's with the drive?
If not then I would say the laser is fried. -
this dvd in question is the first and last one i have ever had a problem with, i also have a pioneer burner and a liteon rom and it dosnt work in either.
-
i am having the same problem, my dvd drive dosen't recognize there is a disc when i put it in. no player or program can find it since the computer can't see it. i have had this problem with two movies so far, both are not ripped or faulty, and can play on a standalone player. these two are "in the mix" and "domino"
which one are you having trouble with, are they new releases like the ones i have? -
As I mentioned earlier, the enigmatic DVDs play fine on stand-alone DVD players. I have problem with 2 such DVDs
But these would not show any files / directories on the PC.
All my DVD-ROM drives, Writers (Pioneer DVR-106D, DVR-107D and the latest BENQ DW1650 and a Matshita on my son's Toshiba Laptop) fail to find any files.
I tried on both Win 98SE and Win XP without success. Have not access to any MAC so cannot comment on that.
Since no files are seen by the PC or the Laptop(or the operating system) none of the softwares (Isobuster, DVDFabDecrypter, DVDdecrypter etc - all of them that are available) see any files - so there is no way to backup. Tried straight DVD-Copy function in Nero burning ROM, that gives up reporting "There is nothing to copy" !!!
Is there anything available which could read DVDs in RAW mode - may be that would be able to create a backup? -
One more thought on this issue.
It could be that the DVDs not showing up on PCs might be made on a MAC usinf HFS or HFS+ file system (I do not have much knowledge about HFS or HFS+ or any thing to do with MAC).
Do we have any utility which would allow us to see MAC files on a Windows based PC and convert them to FAT16 or FAT32 or NTFS files? FAT32 would be good enough to convert the usual files (*.vob or *.ifo or *.bup) in a DVD_Video. From the MAC from here I understand that MAC systems are also having files of the same type / size on the DVD_Videos. -

i took a look at the back cover of the dvd cases which i am having similar problems with. there is a small note that says "this dvd is copy protected and may be played only on licensed devices"
haven't seen that on other dvds, possible they have found a way to only let standalone players read their movies.
don't know what to do, hoping somebody with more computer/video smarts might find a way around this. -

This may or not be applicable, but sometimes one or another program will sort of disable a dvd drive from recognizing a disk. I've gone thru diff. burners and with each it always seems to happen every now and again after using burning or playing programs. So I've givin up trying to find out the programs involved. The best bet that I have found to insure that a problem disk will be read by a drive is to put it in the drive and reboot the computer. If it still dosen't read I don't know what else to say.

Might be worthwhile having a go with DVD Decrypter. I had instances where I've been unable to see the contents of a dvd with my filemanager and yet DVD Decrypter has recognised the contents and extracted them to hd.
-
It had happen to me too awhile ago. I eventurely narrow it down to my usb external hard drive left plugged in. Also, if DVD Decrytor is running at the same time. Un-plug usb and close decrytor. Hope it helps !!!

We are discussing here a situation where the files are invisible to windows (not hidden in Windows Explorer etc). When the files are invisible, none of the other programs mentioned by you gentlemen can see the files. So the question of ripping to HDD or fixing the VOBs do not arise.
Regarding some programs making DVD reading problem, that is not the case in this particular thread. I had mentioned almost 2 years ago in this forum that AnyDVD did create such a problem- but then, the drive reported that there is no disk present in the drive. Here the drive shows the disk as being present, but empty.
So please give this problem some fresh thoughts - I will keep on trying to crack this problem. -
Tried Isobuster 1.9, Various MAC file explorers (for seeing HFS, HS+ files) , DVDFabDecrypter.
PROBLEM REMAINS:-
1. The computer says it is a blank disk.(It is a copy on a DVD-R obtained by my son from some place - it is possible to confirm visually that it is , indeed, a burned DVD-R and not a blank)
2.It plays fine on any standalone DVD player.
Tried AnyDVD to get rid of all possible protections ( I do not know, if it is a protected disk)
NO GO
Any new ideas from anyone.
I have the final solution remaining. Play it and capture it using my capture equipment - I loose the subtiltles and the multitrack AC3, but I do get a backup with stereo audio . no subs. -

I have been doing further search about info. What I came to know is that the files would be invisible under certain cases to Windows (- go to CDRoller site for info). It is still possible to recover data using CDRoller software in such cases.
CDRoller is the next item I am going to try - I shall be back later with my results. -
I'm having this problem too!
In a little different way.
I was ripping the The Matrix boxset's dvd and going to convent to avi for watching on PDA.
The first two titles I rip, The Matrix and Revolution, were fine by DVD Decrypter. Both ripped without problem.
Then third title, Reloaded, was unable to access.
Tried Animatrix, also unable to access.
I thought my DVD writer is dead at this time, but tested with other DVDr-data or DVDr-video, they just work fine as usual.
Strange is, tested several single-region DVD-video (retail DVD) are un-accessable since then.
But region-free (eg. dvdr I created) and all-region dvd are still fine.
The whole thing act like some kind of DVD protection system to me. Still testing with other dvd I got but sure this is mostly not a hardware issue as this point. -
It sounds like the region coding is locking your drive, have you tried AnyDVD and DVDFab Decrypter?

The only step I can think of is to format the computer and re-install everythings to see if the DVD can work again. Really don't want to go this far, it take days to backup and recover.
