  1. OK, just formated the computer and reinstall WindowsXP.
After finished install necessary drivers, I disable the auto-load-disc function and put in the Animatrix DVD.

Result? Still not detect by the LG DVD writer. Another matrix also, same result.

However other DVDr or all-region DVD play fine!

    What happen!?

If it's not a software problem, it may be a hardware issue.

Now going to flash the DVD writer's bios if anything make different.

At least the DVD writer not yet die.

  2. just re-flashed the firmware and still no go.

Any expert here know how a DVD writer work?
Are they using several "head" to read different disc?

How can a DVD writer unable to read protected DVD?

  3. Tried the CDRoller. Had great hopes - but back to earth. Even CDRoller failed to see the contents of the disk. But it plays on a standalone, and I can see the burnt area (it is a DVD-R). None of the other softwares (AnyDVD, DVDFabDecrypter etc etc are able to help in any way)

I am totally bushed. Looks like I will have to go back the basic method - play and capture again.

  4. thomasm,

I do not think there is anything wrong with your writer. So do not try to kill it.

There must be something we are not aware of - that is being used to fool the operasting system from seeing the contents. I was thinking CDRoller may succeed because it does not use Windows ASPI to see the disks, alas, no success.

Just curious. Will the disc play in the computer using software player, like powerdvd? I remember in old days we sometimes needed a software player to"unlock" the dvd, then ripping software could open it. It's worth a shot?

  6. Since the files are invisible to Windows, they are invisible to all software applications running on the Windows.

So, no software player can play this DVD on the PC.

I am still trying to understand what is the difference in a PC looking at the disk and a standalone doing it - and succeeding in finding the recorded matter.

I was experiencing the same symptoms with a DVD (Super Trooper). The DVD will appear in the Window's drive, but the files will be invisible.
I examined my computer to make sure that I had no root kits installed (http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/rootkitrevealer.html)
It looks like the DVD's manufacturer is able to dupe Windows into thinking that the DVD contains no files. ( Is the Entertainment industry in cahoots with MS? )

I was able to counteract this with my modded XBOX. By putting the DVD in a modded XBOX and accessing it through FTP I was able to see the files.

I realise that not everyone has a modded XBOX, so I was curious if anyone has had any success trying to access one of these invisible DVDs with LINUX?
I might try it out and let you know how it goes.

  10. Success at last for me a few minutes ago.

The Adaptec latest UDF reader is able to show me the folders as well as all the files. Details of the UDF reader is below and available for free download from Adptec/Roxio website. A google search for "UDF Reader"would bring it up.

    udfread_v5.1.1.213_inst.exe

Installed it by double clicking on the exe file, asked for a reboot, rebooted and voila, the DVD is at last showing up in Windows (XP at the moment, but the reader is suitable for all types of MS Windows as per the Adaptec site).

The DVD-R files can now be seen by all the other programs in the Windows, Power DVD started up on auto to play the DVD.
