  1. How do you store your burnt DVDs.... ???

I store my tv shows in the slim jewel cases and copies of movies in DVD cases...

BUT both (especially DVD cases) take up alot of space.... Plus I find it hard to find stuff that is in the slim jewel cases...

So any ideas on how to store and organize your collection....????

Of course I want the best for organization and protection of my DVDs...

    Thanks kindly

Space is at a premium in my house (1890's terrace) and so I put burnt and pressed DVD's in the 800 disc version of this....
I used to use the 8- or 10-way DVD cases but even they took too much shelf space up.

I use wallets here also. Just alot more economical in both actual space used and money. Just don't get cheap wallets is my suggestion.

I kinda waver between using jewel cases and the soft leather binders. I'd imagine that sliding the disc in and out of the binder's plasic sleeves could cause scratching on the play-side of the disc... but on the other hand, if your jewel cases have a tight center-lock, and the disc gets momentarily bent when you have to yank it out, then that is bad for the glue between the layers (and is almost as bad as putting burnt cd's/dvd's in your car's sunvisor to cook *wince*)... I'm still torn..

  6. I've had the same concern over these cd/dvd wallets... I wonder if there is any validity to the concern....

  7. I use the Case Logic wallets, but man I worry about discs. Special discs go in a CD case.
I wish I could find a cheap solution.

I still use the slimline cases, but I label the edge and store alphabetically.....On another note, I was puting a system in a guys house and he had rows of shelfs full of dvd's still in the spools. Kinda hard to find stuff that way ...unless each spool is a letter of the alphabet or something.

I may have to invest in one of those 720 cases.
Found the same ones on e-bay for alot cheaper, some are even the meritline ones.

CaseLogic is pricey but usually a good choice. The biggest they make is around 300 disk wallet though.

Look at a bunch at a local store, its easy to figure out which are good and which are bad pretty quickly.

Stuff I use "frequently" go into slimline jewel cases and stuff I use "rarely" go onto spindles.

I use slim line cases and spine labels to tell what the case holds. They take up the least amount of space, do not compress or scratch the discs that wallets do, and stack neatly and compactly on a shelving unit.

Any number of places, but usually where a bargain is to be had. Recently I've been using for about the last 8 months fellowes brand case inserts(FEL99997). This is much better the Neato brand I was using before. Colors show up more vibrant on this fellowes branded paper.

You should be able to find them at any office supply store or at an online retailer.

  17. Thanks, Rof but what I'm really looking for are adhesive spine labels for slim jewel cases. I would just like to print the text and slap a label on and be done.
I've been searching & searching but no luck

I've made do with the spine labels (for regular cd cases) that come with disc labels (I am a reformed cd labeller and I had some sheets of labels left over)
by printing (font size 8, aligning the text to the bottom) and then trimming them down with scissors (which is rather fiddley) but I don't want to buy disc labels just to get the sticky spine labels.

    Getting back on track:

In the Somebodeez household, we have levels of importance.

I put my burned DVDs that we watch the most or that are most important in slim DVD cases, DVDs that are some what important but not used as much go into slim CD jewel cases and get stored in a locking CD storage cabinet and others that aren't so important go into paper sleeves and get stored in the empty box that my jewel cases came in.
My data discs go into CD wallets.

I have a few friends who print out on regular paper the spine label and cut them out, create a small fold beneath the text, and use two small pieces of scotch tape to create a label similiar to what you're doing with those spine labels. They are too cheap to buy case inserts, but I must admit they don't look bad and make finding a disc quite easy.

  19. Ikea,
You can buy the unit on the left by itself at the stores. The drawers are symetrical so you can have it vertical or horizontal.

    Then use envelopes or slimlines

I use Ant Movie Catalog, downloadable from this site, and store burnt disks in slimline cases. I cut label strips apporox 1/4" x 2' with a number first than the title I place this tag on the hinged edge and store them on edge like books. I store them by number that way I dont have to keep going back to re insert disks as I would have to if they were sorted alphabetically. Ant movie cat keeps track of everything.

So if I buy a 15-pack spindle, I shouldn't burn them and put them right back on that spindle in pancake form? I should separate them?

I wouldn't. I always think of little pieces of dust or crap that gets on discs. I would think pancaking them together would grind the debris into the disc's playing surface, or if it's on the label side, then it'll grind into the playable side of the disc above. Add more and more weight with added discs, coupled with the discs being spun, I'd think they would scratch pretty easy... I've always avoided it, so I can't be sure though...

Putting discs in sleeves (paper or in binders) might be almost as bad - except the discs don't tend to spin very easily.

Now individual jewel cases, where the playable surface doesn't actually touch the case - that's where it's at. Unless... the spindles are too tight. If you need to bend the disc at all to get it out, then you can damage the glue between the layers. Some articles have said this is the cause of a lot of disc degredation.

I use 25 disc spindles for my critical archives. They are cheap, stackable, compact, lockable, dust proof, moisture proof and impact resistant.

For everything else, it really doesn't matter. I've used leather cd wallets for years in the corporate environment and they never failed me, so I use them now at home for replaceable or duplicate video, software, data.

  26. i have and probably always will store my dvd's in paper sleeve cases. i use to spend money on the Tyvek cases but i didnt see the point after paper seemed to work just as good. i have been doing this for years and have had no problems. I often take out old discs to check them out and they play perfectly. Oh and i use only quality media such as TY.

  27. Started with 100 CD carousel storing the DVDs in regular jewel cases (could only store horizontally). After 300 or so bought the Sony 400 CD player but didn't like the software and the fact that it always played the last DVD you watched automatically upon startup. Returned. Bought the 800 carousel storage unit on sale BestBuy $99 and store them vertically (actually a pretty nice unit). Scan the DVD jacket and use the back to create a tray card with all movie info and print the movie name on both end flaps. Had each slot numbered and referenced with a free movie alphabetical movie program (Movie Tracker) Haven't numbered the new 800 unit yet. After 3 years or so even the earliest play perfectly--have always used Rytek--now G03 hub printable, been thinking of switching to TY--waiting for a good hub printable sale.
