    Do a search on SVHS...
    Super VHS supports S-video output...
TAke it a step farther, and get one with built in TBC (Time base corrector)...

    Good luck!!!

The next question I dare ask is...

Is it worth it to get a VCR with Sivdeo output if all my tapes were recorded on other VCRs?

S-Video vs composite won't make a huge difference for normal VHS tapes but the other features found on upper range SVHS decks will improve capture (e.g. TBC, noise reduction, better audio, more precise transport, etc.).

If any of the tapes are SVHS, S-Video will make a significant difference. Camcorder tapes in particular will benefit.

JVC still makes a full range of decks. You will find several other manufacturers in the used market including Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Sony..

I was reading about a JVC model that has all of that but its 400 dollars and well out of my price range. You wouldnt happen to know of a VHS model of a reasonable price that improves capture?

You will find a good deal of SVHS deck discussion in the Restoration Forum.

    Yes.
My regular (non S-Video) tapes look better and record better using the S-Video output from a Panasonic VCR. (mass market model less than $200. Dont know if Panasonic still makes a comparable model )

I haven't seen many. When I went looking for one in my area ALL of the major outlets such as Best Buy and Circuit city at the time had no decks with s-video... to quote a BB salesperson "what's s-video?"

Anyhow the only ones that I found with S-Video were from a smaller electronics outfit called REX Electronics. They had a wide selection of JVC decks with s-video, I think the cheapest was $100.

Just to add I don't see much difference between composite and s-video from regular VHS tapes.

I use a Panasonis AG-1960 which is an older professional SVHS editing deck. I own two and just bought one on eBay for $75. It is a great unit. It's newer cousin, the AG-1980 has a built in TBC. I saw one of these 1980s sell on eBay last week for $120. So if you don't have to have new think about one of these older SVHS pro decks. You'll save money and be getting a professional unit. Panasonic and JVC are the brands I would research.
