Ok i have a few questions as usual so try your best )

I have RITEK DVD-R 8X disks with a pioneer 106 DVD writer i think, pretty old but does the JOB.
Whats the difference between -R disks and +R disks and do i want them both and for what jobs?

I have... VSO DIVXTODVD: Nero: Dvd Decryptor: Iso Buster: Alcohol 120% etc.

I have burned 2 DVD's in the past using DVD decryptor and alcohol and they both play on my PC as .VOB (DVD format) but failed to play on my DVD PLAYER, I DONT KNOW WHY THIS IS. Region code maybe? I dunno what to do for that or is it the disk format?

I have loaned it to a friend so he can try it but i wont hear from him in a few days so please try and help.

THNX ALOT GUYS, ur gr8 help as always

Your writer will burn both +/-R

Here is a link mentioning Ritek 8x -r with your burner https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=2803&searchdvdwriter=113

Search to see if your dvd player plays Ritek dvds in the dvd player section<----

It should play the disks because i have converted many xvid/avi etc to dvd format using vso divxtodvd and made the .vob and they play fine on my DVD PLAYER.

Some region things or something maybe?

Dvd+R are newer and should play in most standalones that are relatively new, while Dvd-R are able to play in more standalones...yet many will use +R and booktype (that's what I do with +R) them so that the dvd players read them as Dvd-Rom (as are movie disks that you purchase) which allows the media to play in a larger variety of players...I would suggest that you confirm what media content can be played in the stand alone...also check that your burner can be book typed (some cannot and simply need a firmware upgrade). I use Taiyo Tuden 01's and 02's, FuJi's and Sony's +R but are made in Japan and code as Taiyo Yuden 02's...and Verbs (for Dvd 5 and DL dvd 9). Laately I have been burning some =R media at 6x and they are flawless, kind of strange as I advocate burning at 4x...but I like to try new things.

advocate burning at 4x? Why? I have never burned a dvd any lower than 8x, unless it was a +rw that was rated at 2.4x or a DL media. Why burn at 4x when you can get 8x verbatims to burn @ 12x, or even burn them @ 16x with the new benq 1640? I just don't get why you would burn @ 4x when 8x, 12x, 16x all work flawlessly?

Lots are still too shit-scared to burn CDs at any greater than 4X

It all comes down to reliability; if your hardware can sustain reliable results burning at or higher than rated media speeds and your playback devices play them flawlessly, then good luck to you, I say

... but at the end of the day, we'd all rather something that will definitely, 100%, no problem work, right ? Hence recommendations that may seem to be a little conservative to those who have never had any problems at all with anything. It's recommending something that will give excellent results every time, as opposed to something that may or may not work for you.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm with ya friends, just stating that anything higher for some have caused problems, yet I'm finding that 6x have work flawlessly and I can make additional backups later on. If burnign at 12x, 16x works for you and your system then by all means burn away. It's like when people ask what is the best back-up software out there and then in a forum you can see a dozen or more answers as to why someone believes program A is better than program B...it goes back to the eye of the beholder. Quality is of high importance for my system. Have a good evening.

Where did the VOB's originate from? Did you rip the disc to your HHD, or download them, etc. Maybe the vobs need to be re-authored in order to get them to work on a standalone player?

Also what process did you go through to get you finished dvd. (EXAMPLE: I rip with dvddecrypter, Edit with dvdshrink if needed, then burn the VOB's with copytodvd.)

Well run them thru DVDShrink (no compression) and see what happens. That should remove any region codes. They may be PAL, which will play on the PC and on some standalones.

  12. Explain with as much detail as possible what the differences are, in both the source file and your process, between the situation where the disk does work and the case where it does not.

So far, all I got is some work and some don't. Also, you are referring to VOB files only, are you sure you are authoring to a correct structure with VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files?

Also, you mention loaning the disk to one guy and then report it works in everybody else's player. Exactly how many different DVD standalones does "everybody else" include?
