Everytime I author I wonder which is best. I've tried both img and video_ts burning, but I can't figure out if there's any difference when it comes to safety, burning speed or compatibility?

Imgburn in Build mode will recognise that a video_ts folder is part of the DVD structure, and burn accordingly. It has been months and months since Imgburn required an ISO. You can even use Imgburn to create an ISO from your Video_TS folder.

Imgburn can also burn any files as data using Build mode. I use it to burn AVI files for my Divx player.

I've been burning video_ts for a while and they work in my dvd player. I heard though that you need an audio_ts also for some dvd players. Is that true? Is an .img or .iso safer in that way?

Just tried an "video_ts & audio_ts" and that one didn't play in one dvd player. The same film played when burned as iso though. Iso is safer, my conclusion.

I haven't converted to ISO in over a year and have no problems. One incident does not a pattern make.

I have never converted to ISO and I have never had a problem. I never understood why anyone took the extra step to convert to ISO, just so the burning app could disassemble it to burn to the DVD. An ISO is nothing more than the video_ts structure in a single file. Look at the DVD file structure after burning. It's in video_ts structure, otherwise it wouldn't play in any DVD player. As far as whether the audio_ts folder is required or not, I don't know. I have always just included it.
