  1. Does anyone know how to defeat the copy protection for protected VHS tapes on ATI AIW cards ? On some prerecorded tapes the record button grays out but others are no problem. Is there work around for this crap ? There are some possiblities here but nothing proven enough.

If your getting corrupted captures besides external hardware such as TBC....... nope. That goes for personal tapes as well.

There's a work around for the button I heard of, start up the record program and start recording. Turn on the VCR and push play. You'll get a dialog box that says MMC will stop recording now because it's protected material, just don't click the OK button and it will continue recording. I've seen this posted and don't know if that's the exact procedure, also my guess is that the captured file is going to exhibit the MV anyway.

Don't think "I'll just get another card" either. Most of them are doing anti-copy these days. You have to feed these devices clean signals, so get a TBC.

To add to that some are more prone than others. Same home movie tape that the AIW and a Geforce VIVO card wouldn't directly capture worked perfectly with a Canopus ADVC. Some have workarounds as well, the VIVO card for example was fixable by resorting to older drivers but that appeared to reduce the quality as well. The AIW is hopeless for issues like this without additional hardware.

In the end the best alternative is a TBC or other external hardware. The Sima products are supposed to help with the MV, I can verify that the CT-2 works with the VIVO card.

  5. SFAIK, the 9000 series has changed the MV detection implementation.
Only fix is a true TBC.

Previous cards, 7500 and before, could be fixed with a software hack and/or a SCM for $40.00. I can verify this for the AIW 7500 and the AIW 128 pro.

  6. I am thinking of buying the SIMA CT-2 in hope that it will help me out with my 9800 pro AIW. I have a problem with the 9800 thinking that old tapes that need tracking are MV protected.
Do you think it will help?

The AVT-8710 TBC is only $195 from B&H.
The CT-2 is a bit expensive for what little it does.
May as well go all the way and never have a problem again. Plus it has some minor proc amp controls that may be nice to have (though ATI MMC has a virtual proc amp, so maybe too much).

The hack for the older cards doesn't work for the 9000 series.

  10. The AVT-8710 only has Composite Video.
I would like something with s-video but I guess it's still better than the CT-2.

I think it depends on what VHS tapes your trying to capture...

I have some older VHS tapes made in the late 80's and early 90's. Ive had no problems in capturing Dangaio or any of my Dirty Pair tapes. There is no macrovision...

I just starting a use a new Sony VCR that we were unable to use with our D*TV DVR because of the form of Macrovision it left. It was strange though, directly from the "Copy To Tape" outputs on the DVR, it produced a Black and White picture... Seems this is a common problem with Sony VCR's and DVR's in general. We went a got a $50 RCA HiFi VCR and it does the trick, NO PROBLEM.

So it could be the machine your using also.

The AVT-8710 should have S-video inputs and outputs as it's the case with mines. Unless the design has changed.

  14. The Turtle Beach Video Advantage capture cards don't have proplems with macrovision on video tapes; it's one of the reasons I bought one. Along with TMPGEnc, transfering my old VHS tapes to DVD has worked well. The VA cards have S-video inputs as well.

I would like to try the tweak for my ATI Rage Fury Pro graphic/capture
card. Is there a .reg tweak for this card and macrovision ??

This is an older card, before the 7000 times.

    Thanks you,

    Hi,

I've tried this method in this thread here
** MV BYPASSED on the 9800 AIW..

It uses the "ativmvxx.ax" file swap method (tweak) but it
failed when I tried it on a Commercial VHS movie, "Contact"
    (THX full screen version)

What showes in this particular MV, is "huge" curling, from
the top, and reaches towards the center of the video. It's
pretty bad when using my capture card below.

    My capture card & setup:
** ATI Rage Fury Pro (AGP)
    ** OS: win98x
    ** MMC: 7.1
    ** ALT: virtualVCR
