hi there, after browsing through the tool list... i couldnt find any tool that gives you info about the DVD vobs.

I need to know what program was used to create those vobs and the encoder that was used, is there such thing?

    Many thanks

+ sorry if its a silly question.

You won't find one as the process of creating the vobs is known as Authoring. vob files are basically mpeg2 files so an mpeg2 encoder needs to be used before you author them which creates the DVD file structure with bup, vob and ifo files.

Some authoring software incorporates an encoder so will accept files in any format, others need them to be mpeg2 already.

See What is DVD at the top left for a fuller description.

  3. You can use VobEdit to view the DVD info/structure. I dont think it will display anything about the authoring or encoding program used though.
    Quality is my policy.

GSPOT can sometimes see "dummy" data left in a stream. TMPGEnc, for example, has some stuff in MPEGs it makes.

yep. The latest GSpot Beta (2.52) can open VOBs directly, and if you're lucky (and if it's a homemade DVD) you might be able to see "Encoded by TMPGEnc" or similar in the frame on the left, like:

    or

I don't know why you need to know this information though ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

If the output is high quality and prfessional in finish, then the techniques and software used should not influence your opinion of their preffessionalism. If they used a freeware encoder would you think less of them even if the results were on par with a $2000 encoder ?
