  1. Hello all!
I recently purchased a new burner, a benq atapi dvd dd G7H9, and have noticed that my finished burnt disks are unable to play on my standalone DVD player. I use Tmpeg DVD author to make the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, and use the burning tool in there to burn the disks. I have never had this problem before with my old burner, a pioneer, so i am guessing that it's the benq burner. Older disks that i have burnt with the pioneer are working on the standalone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks

  2. You didn't give a model number, rather a firmware version, but I'll just assume you have a BenQ1620. Update that firmware to G7P9 at least, which is what I use, having found it to be satisfactory. That will also let you use the BenQ utilities, such as QScan and the Bitsetting Utility. You also should get CDSpeed (free from Ahead) so you can do disc quality tests.

But all that and more is covered in the BenQ sub-forum over at CDfreaks.

    Good luck.

Different drives behave differently with the same media. It is likely that your BENQ burner doesn't like the media that you are using. What is the media you are using?

  5. Visit the site I posted, those guys are ultra-nerdy about burners. They'll be all over your questions within minutes. :P But get CDSpeed and/or DVDinfoPRO and post back what they identify your drive and firmware as. Good luck.

Have you considered trying another burning application ??
I would recommend giving the following method a try - it may work for you,

1st - Convert your VIDEO_TS folder to an ISO image using IMGTool Classic, make sure it is the CLASSIC version.

2nd - Burn the ISO image to disc using DVDdecrypter in ISO write mode, then test your disc in your standalone player.

I would recommend trying this with a DVD/RW disc first to save wasting any DVD/R discs, then of course if this works for you, you can continue to write to DVD/R.

If you require a guide then take a look here,

    http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/38/59/

    or here,

    http://www.mrbass.org/dvdburn/

And as recommended earlier, update your firmware if necessary.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

  8. Yeah, I second that. Anyway, your drive info matches mine exactly, which is a BenQ1620 rebadge. Your firmware should be updated, that's very old, in spite of the Z being out of the regular sequence. G is generic firmware, B is explicitly BenQ firmware. You could cross-flash to B, but no real reason to do so, as G7P9 (and up) will allow you to do everything the B does, use the tools, etc. Dunno what cross-flashing would mean if you have to RMA, maybe they'd try to give you a hard time. Here's where I got my generic firmware:

    http://www.nu-global.com/1_english/3_products/01_ide.php?pID=21

And here's where I got the Bitsetting Utility and QScan:

    http://support.benq.com/front/benqmain.asp

Go to the download center and enter DVD rewriter as product type. Then software as download type.

    And get Nero CD-DVD Speed.

    Good luck.

[EDIT] BTW, what discs are you using? Use DVDinfoPro to find out the manufaturer ID. As suggested, maybe your burner doesn't like them. Or they're crap discs that your old Pioneer somehow managed to burn acceptably.

  13. I had a Ben-Q writer (Same model as yours) and it did exactly the same thing.Glad it was cheap because it had to be dumped in the bin.

Edit:Unfortunetely I trusted it would be fine and ripped up the box and lost the receipt.Bad mistake.

  14. is it the benq model itself? or is it the dual layer that is causing the problem (burns both +/- )

My old pioneer dvr-105 has been working flawlessly!

  15. Ben-Q 1620,couldn't even burn a single layer disc without an error three quarters of the way through.Buffer level was always 89%(Strange,because I have a fast PC)
My LG GSA 4163B is perfect,no coasters, burns flawlessly with a buffer of 98% in Nero and 100% in DVDDecrypter(Which I always use for burning DVD now)

Did you have any luck with the method I suggested ??
    Did you try it ??
Let us know because I am interested to know whether it worked or not.

I would recommend staying with Pioneer writers as they seem to give fewer problems than other writers, but that's my opinion.
You've obviously had success with them in the past so better to stick with a brand you know works.

That must mean that mine was faulty hardware and maybe XBucklawX's is too.

  19. I was always under the impression that + media was for data storage, and - media was for video!

    "XBucklawX"

I have only used + media for the 300+ dvds I have used. All play on about 14 dvd players that I had/have/or tried on.

  21. Just took the Pioneer burner out of my old computer and put it in my new computer and burnt a disk. It worked perfectly in my DVD player. I took the Benq back and got a full money refund. Was persuaded to buy a LG, but decided on the money instead. I have a Pioneer DVR-A09 ordered!
Thanks for all your help guys!

  22. Ok guys!
It's me again, and the exact same thing is happening!
I'm beginning to think that it is the dual layer burners that are doing this. Is there somewhere in Tmpegenc Dvd author that lets you choose whether you want to burn a + disk or a - disk. I'm beginning to think that these disks are being burnt as +'s for some strange reason, because my dvd player is not picking the disks up!
    Thanks again

  23. I'm assuming you are using the Pioneer A09 ??
Have you updated the firmware ??

You shouldn't need to or even be able to select which type of disc you want to burn, this will be done by the burner itself.

  24. I'm beginning to think that it might be my standalone DVD player. For some strange reason it is not reading anything that i burn using the dual layer +/- burner. Works perfect with the - burner
BTW, my dvd player is an Electrohome EH8181A v25212160
