There are no high speed USB host controllers installed on this computer

The computer has six usb ports 4 on the back 2 on the front.

Simply put. the computer has USB 1.0 compliant ports, which will result in slower transfers of pictures. The device may work or maynot. Suggest your friend buy and install a USB 2.0 add on card. This will allow the camera which is USB 2.0 compliant to transfer at the correct speed and thus avoid the error.

Or better yet - a FireWire card, if the cam has FireWire.

. . or purchase a card with both USB2 and firewire. You can usually find them for the same price as USB2 cards. Even if you don't have firewire now, you never know what the future of your computing habits may hold.

Most MiniDV or Digital8 camcorders only provide a highly compressed video stream on the USB port intended for internet streaming. The USB port is also used for still transfer.

To get a full quality DV transfer, you need to use the IEEE-1394 (aka Firewire, ILink) ports.
