when you get xvid/divx/avi videos that have black borders, are they actually widescreen videos, or are they made to fit a 4:3 display?

is it possible to make a video display as 16:9 (on my 16:9 HDTV) in TMPGEnc Plus? or do i have to properly resize it with like Vdub or Avisynth?

It depends if the borders fill it out to 4:3 or 16:9

What is the source resolution ?

  3. Hi
I am really sorry if I am not supposed to be doing this but I thought of continuing on the same lines as this forum.

I was wondering about exactly the same things. I have a movie with original res of 608x352. And I plan to use CCE to convert it to DVD. What I dont get is that how to decide if I should calculate my black corder width based on 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ration. how do I determind this?

You can use FitCD or my own resize calculator (see my sig) to get a feel for what they would look like. Generally, if you are already resizing up to get compliant resolution from something like an xvid or divx source, 4:3 is probably enough. To get to 16:9 requires a larger resize for no real gain UNLESS your target is widescreen TV. Then 16:9 is by far the better choice.

sorry for not posting back. The reason i didnt post back was because at the time, i did not have a source file, i was simply just asking if it was possible.

but now i do have a video that i want to convert to DVD format and in 16:9 if possible. Here is the file information from virtualdub.

is it possible to make the DAR 16:9 with TMPGEnc? or do i have to resize it with Avisynth or virtualdub? The source already seems to be 16:9 according to the resolution of the video.

do i just select NTSC (16:9) in TMPGEnc?

In TMPGEnc just go to Setting and Video and set Aspect Ratio to 16:9 then on the Advanced tab for Video Arrange Method choose Full Screen Keep Aspect Ratio. Your Source Aspect Ratio will most likely be 1:1 and won't need to be changed.

    thanks, thats what i thought.

i have another question thats off topic. Whenever i open this source file in virtualdub or TMPGEnc, i get a warning on the preview screen saying:

Warning: Nothing to Output BFRAME Decoder Lag

what does that mean, should i worry about it and when i burn it to a DVD after all the encoding is done, will that show up? When i play the video using Media Player Classic, that Warning message doesnt show up.

also, i would like to cut off the credits at the end/start but even when i do a direct stream copy, the output from vdub has some small pauses once in a while in the video. Im guessing it has something to do with that warning message.

nm, i seemed to have fixed the small pauses by using virtualdub mp3 freeze.
