I've been trying to figure out the whole AR and res thing, but i just can't wrap myself around it.
Can someone please help me understand this, so i have this dvdr and the res/dar was 720x480/4:3 (so DGindex says) I made a xvid copy of 592x432/4:3
How do i know what the pixel ar thing under gordian knot should be (1:1,16:9,4:3 etc) Maybe dvdshink changed the res etc as i used it to make the ts folders etc from a iso, but someone told me the dvd was a 1:1 copy, but dgindex said its 4:3, this is making me even more lost.
But can someone explain the whole PAR, DAR etc thing to me as if i was 10.
The main problem is i don't know when to pick 1:1 or 4:3, 16:9 how to i find that out by just looking at the res? so explaining that would also be amazing.
Thanks in advance,

If DGIndex says it's 4:3 then the VOBs are 4:3. Upon opening the D2V in GKnot the Input Pixel Aspect Ratio should also say 4:3. If someone told you DVD Shrink made a 1:1 copy, all that means is that it's identical to the source. That statement has nothing to do with DAR or PAR. DVD Shrink didn't change the resolution (720x480) or the DAR (4:3). If converting a DVD to an XviD AVI and you're opening a D2V project file, it'll either be 4:3 or 16:9. Since the resolution (720x480) is (almost) always the same, then you don't get the information from that. Check what DGIndex says is the DAR.

Okay, so in other words it's 4:3 and don't listen to people? haha
If i make a xvid copy and make the res 656x480 (1.098:1) would that be correct?
and be an okay copy of this dvd? -
Yes, that would be OK, assuming the source DVD is 720x480 and you're not doing any cropping. GKnot will give you the exact same resolution if you've got the ITU box checked in the Options Tab.

A lot of people like to encode to 720x480, set the PAR flag using MPEG Modifier, and then let the player do the resize. I don't happen to be one of them, but keeping the original resolution is valid. Most standalone DVD/MPEG-4 players won't honor the PAR flag, though.

I find most current standalone media players respect Divx/Xvid PAR/DAR flags. I usually encode with the original frame size (or cropping black borders) and PAR now. Actually, I've mostly switched to x264 and MKV. But I still keep the original PAR.

Thanks guys for the replies, i have a few new questions ( they don't have anything to do with par, dar etc)
What is the best resize filter to use?
and what is the best field operation to use?
also what is the best profile level to use for xvid? -
1. Some are 'smoother' and compress better than do other 'sharper' resizers. It depends on the material, how each looks to you, and the quality you'll obtain given your other settings (resolution, final file size, etc.). There's no single answer to that question.
2. Depends on the source. There is no 'best' field operation. If NTSC, though, it's usually not a good idea to use 'Ignore Pulldown Flags'.
3. What's with these 'best' questions? There are no bests. I usually use Unrestricted. That may not be such a good idea, though, if the intent is to play it on a standalone. You know, you could start doing some research on your own. -
I have done research, but it was along time ago.
What does the smooth and sharp mean though?
after that ill start looking for stuff on my own.
Thanks for the reply though. -
Blurry vs. sharp. The two ends of the spectrum: blurry has less artifacts and compresses better, sharp has more artifacts and doesn't compress as well (ie, requires more bitrate). Too much sharpening result in jagged edges, moire artifacts, halos, and accentuated noise. From less sharp to more sharp: bilinear, bicubic, Lanczos3, Spline16, etc.
