Is there any rule of thumb when to use ac3 to compress audio, so I can fit more video at a higher bitrate on my dvds? I usually use video plus wave audio on my dvds. My videos are anywhere between 10 min to 25 min.

You should always use AC3 or MP2 to compress audio. Using LPCM wav is a terrible waste of disc space and video bitrates.

The only reason to use LPCM is if your audio source is "pure" and you can truly hear the difference in the quality of the sound. (LPCM is uncompressed.)
