Is there any rule of thumb when to use ac3 to compress audio, so I can fit more video at a higher bitrate on my dvds? I usually use video plus wave audio on my dvds. My videos are anywhere between 10 min to 25 min.

  2. You should always use AC3 or MP2 to compress audio. Using LPCM wav is a terrible waste of disc space and video bitrates.

The only reason to use LPCM is if your audio source is "pure" and you can truly hear the difference in the quality of the sound. (LPCM is uncompressed.)

MP2 is only a part of the PAL DVD standard and not part of the NTSC DVD standard, so you may find that some DVD players bought in NTSC land have issues with MP2 on DVDs. For this reason, you could probably clarify this by saying "for maximum compatibility, always use AC3". This then covers both PAL and NTSC lands.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If you are putting on 10 - 25 minutes on a disk, then you have space to spare anyway. Generally, for 2 channel 192 - 224, and for 5.1 I use 384 or even 448 (rarely though).
