I bought a 5 port workgroup switch to use with my cable router. One of my ports on the cable router doesn't work so I figured I could use the uplink port and connect that to the uplink port of the 5 port workgroup switch. The problem I am having is it doesn't work. I can't get any internet connection. I'm new to networking pc's. I thought it would be a simple task.
I have 4 pc's, 3 of them are running windows 2000 pro and 1 has xp pro. Do I use a network cat 5 cable or just the regular cat5 cable for the uplink port? I'm using just the regular cat 5 cable. I'm totally confused and would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

You need to use a crossover cable from the uplink to the switch. if my memory serves me correctly.

It depends on whether or not router supports MDI / MDI-X on the uplink port. Also, if the port on your router that went bad is the one next to the uplink port, then the uplink may not work either because they sometimes share some important circuitry.
