  1. I am encoding my avi file to mpeg2. But the output is never satisfactory. The video seems worse than the original, and the audio is always out of sync. Can anyone give me some hint on how what to do?

Video quality depends on the quality of the original file and the encoding settings you use. If you are encoding for a DVD, separate the audio before encoding and add that to your authoring program. Encode the video separately and add that also, then author and burn.

Of course it does. Each reencode lowers the quailty, if you don't encode to a lossless format (which would amount to just a decode). Without more specifics on your source and destination, it's hard to pinpoint your problems.

    What is your source ?
    What is the runtime ?
Is it a compressed format such as Xvid/Divx
What filters (including resizing) are you applying ?
What bitrate are you using ?
Is it CBR or VBR ? If VBR, 1 or 2 passes ?
    Read my blog here.

  5. My source file is compressed with pixl, which I capture from antenna using my PCTV rave card. I convert it to 6000 bits/s 2-pass VBR, with noise reduction, I-frame only. Actually I do not have much knowledge on the options, even I read the help content, as I do not what they really mean.
The output file is more blocky, noise is a bit reduced.
I hope to get something close to the source file. Is it possible?

    Hi,
Umm.. yes.. if you have a good computer.. try using TMPGEnc Xpress if you have any problems with plain simple TMPGEnc. Make sure the bitrate is atleast 6000 when being converted to MPEG 2.. and keep the audio and video as seperate streams.. if the video is too long you most likely are not going to get good quality. More than 2 hours is not meant for a DVD-5 so if you try to convert it to fit on a single DVD-R and it is longer than 2 hours than you probably aren't going to get quality video encode.

6000 bits/s is a way too low for I frames only. That is your bitrate is not enough. Even 6000 kilobits/s is low bitrate for I frames only.
