I was using VirtualDub to capture avi. Everything was fine, EXCEPT when I made the mistake of changing the Image Format to 24-bit RGB instead of YUY2. When I changed the Image Format to 24-bit RBG my system crashed immediately (not even a blue screen first) and now everytime I try to Capture Avi with Virtual Dub or ANY other capture software I either crash or lock up.
I have a 1.2 GB Athlon machine with a Radeon VE graphics card and a TV-Wonder PCI card. I know that people have had problems with the TV-Wonder PCI card, but using the WMD wrapper I got around that problem. That is until I made the mistake of changing the Image Format to 24-bit RBG.
I'm thinking this is a registry issue, but I am clueless how to resolve it. Or if not a registry issue, I'm not certain what to correct. I tried to restore my system as I am using Windows ME, but the system couldn't restore back to the point before I made the Image Format change.
Previously I converted my AVI captures to VCD with TMPGEnc 2.0 and the results were very good. Would just like to get back where I started.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too am having the same problem. I obviously can't capture anything over 2gig due to 98.
I am capturing using HUFFY as the compression(set to best). Hide on capture is set. My video buffer max is 50. Lock video with sound is set.Noise reduction enabled(NTSC settings for VCD). DMA is on. Windows virtual memory set to 384 min 768 max. My hardware is as follows:
AMD 600EB processor
384 meg ram
20gig UDMA drive 5400 rpm
Windows 98e
WINTV-Go pci capture
VOODOO 3000 AGP
I also have a problem when editing any avi that is greater than 1 gig(same thing happens, it either resets or will return a "VDUB error:invalid format". I have the compression settings on this also set to HUFFY (best), and all I am doing is filtering to crop and and sometimes to deinterlace(sometimes field bob). So this limits my VCD capture to about 5 min at a time (what a pain).
I've searched the forums and went to MURC. Unless the title didn't match the content(very possible), I have not seen this problem. -
Oops, one other thing, I am using YUY2. I do not use TMPGEnc. This only deals with VirtDub.

Dudes. . .
What's going on over here? ? ? What's all the beaf???
Sounds like you guys are capturing till you run out of space, hence your
"hide on capture". when I used avi_io to cap, and capped to point where
I got the message: "Disk Full", and then went to drag file into VD to
process, it would give me an error message - something about indexing
and stuff, but it would go through and re-index (take a long while), but
would, in the end, allow me to frameserve to TMPG.
The same thing happens when I'm capping from VD. Not enough hd
space causes the capturing app to bail out without finishing/cleaning up
where it left off.
In your guys cases, I'm not sure why you can't conintue in the same
manner as I have (above) but maybe its just the type of capture card
you guys are using and whatever filters you're using and settings prior
to capturing.
If you can get several seconds of AVI captured, and then feed it to
VD, chances are, that it's in your settings prior to capturing, and you have
to make some changes or something. See if you can try this out on your
end.
I'm not sure why you guys are TAXing your system with these high res.
ie, 704x480 or higher. But, for whatever reason, just be happy!
This evening, I'm gonna do yet ANOTHER test. I'm gonna capture at
704x480 / 720x480 and finally, 352x480 and encode down to 352x480
and see IF there is ANY REAL difference in quality!! I'm appulled at your
high resolutions! he, he... I can't stand it any more, he, he....
I'll get right back ta yas on this. . . be right back! I've about had it!! He he....

Why not just delete your VirtualDub folder and download a new copy? Often, these programs create a small .ini file containing your settings. Once that's gone, you'll start up with the original VirtualDub settings.
Maybe I'm missing something here... -
Ok, ok, I'm back!
I've just completed my tests. Had some problems with capping at 704x480,
using a DVD disk*. I was dropping too many frames, so I did a 10 second
clip in:
* 704x480, and
* 352x480
Both caps were done with NO filtering during capturing, using the
EXACT same settings other than changing the resolution.
ENCODING:
------------
Capped at: 704x480 w/ VirtualDub
* I used the DeInterlace filter, then
* frameserved to TMPG and encoded with 704x480
Capped at: 704x480 w/ VirtualDub
* I used the DeInterlace filter and reiszed to 352x480, then
* frameserved to TMPG and encoded with 352x480
Capped at: 352x480 w/ VirtualDub
* I used the DeInterlace filter, then
* frameserved to TMPG and encoded with 352x480
Burned with Nero:
* SVCD at 704x480
* SVCD at 704x480
* SVCD at 352x480
NOTES:
--------------------------------------------------------------
* the 704x480 cap and straight fee to TMPG, encode to 704x480
yielded the best quality
* the 2nd 704x480 cap was the same quality as the above
* the 352x480, well, you could almost see just a slight blur, ...I said
just a light blur if you really look CLOSE!! Anyways, that could have
ben fixed with just a small Sharp filter adjustment at 5 or 10, and would
have looked virtually identical.
The above IS my HONEST, TRUE observation/report of comparison
capturing!
I'll stick with my 352x480 any day! Cause I know, it work!!
Bare in mind, this was all quick and dirty - I was rushing.
So, you see, need I say more?
Thank you for your time!

Thanks for the suggestions, I must have left some ambiguity in my post. I capture at 352*240 29.97fps. I noticed you did 352*480, will this transfer to VCD format with bbmpeg? I guess I can try it. I will also try removing the folder and reloading the program and see what happens.
Unless I am doing something wrong, I didn't think 10 gig was alot for two hours of film(avi). Of course after I filter it and bbmpeg it into MPEG1 it shrinks nicely.
Oh, and thank you for your timely response, it is greatly appreciated.
