    Hello,

Yep never ceases to amaze me. Now that we've been at a 70mph speed limit for years now it still amazes me that people need to FASTER than that! (the 70mph limit is out in the more open areas - closer to cities its 65 or lower...).

I mean I can set the cruise to 70 and people will pass me like crazy! It's funny some of them must be going 80 or more!

What about your state/province/country???? Any Mario Andretti's there????

highways/interstates are 70 around here. If you're going 70 I'll pass you, I usually go about 77'ish when I set the cruise control. Seems to be what most people go as well.

You know, by the next light, folks were already passing me.

I went there for my cousin's wedding, despite the fact he lives in Sarasota, FL, and didn't encounter any driving worse that I've seen elsewhere, but I was only there a few days (in Warren), thankfully.

No offense to the people who live in the greater Detroit area, but I found the place to be depressing, and the airport was a mess when we were there in the fall of '97. The only one worse I've been to was in Moscow....

as many times as I have been on here complaining about Florida drivers, I have never had a single problem with Michigan drivers.

Michigan drivers drive my pace, and if I am going faster, they move over as soon as they get a chance to let faster traffic pass them.

Went to east lansing a few weeks ago, a 4.5 hour trip according to mapquest 3.5 hours later I'm sitting at Michigan State University. I love driving in Michigan, it's flat, and people there know where the gas pedal is

On the Interstate I typically drive around 80-85. Last summer going to Tennessee I set the cruise on 94 and still had to move over to let traffic go.

So hey Yoda...grandma yoda...lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way :P

Try coming back in the winter after spending 4 months on Maui.
Talk about depressing. Green/lush to dirty grey/brown. And yes the airport(old terminal) is one of the worst I've been in. The new one is pretty nice. I dont mind flying outta there.

I tend to do 80-95 conditions permitting - isn't 100+ an automatic ban?

Unnoficially it is. Anything that is 30Mph or 50% (whichever is less) can lead to a ban. But AFAIK these are just guidelines for the Magistrates, nothing absolute, so thay can take extenuating circumstances into account. By this I mean you could get banned for lower speeds if you were seen to be tailgating or driving recklessly such as overtaking on bend.

The Ohio - State highway Patol (State troopers) love ppl from Michigan.

I have been know to hit 110 - 120 on some sections of the Ohio Turnpike.... Now that it is three lanes per side, there are only so many spots for the troopers to hide. I do look out for air patrol in the warm months though.... they calculate speed based on the time it take you to move between the bold white lines every half mile or so.

Hell, you think Sheremetyevo (I or II) in Moscow is bad (yeah, I've been there too), you should see the airport in L'viv (Ukraine). There are buildings nearby that look like they've been untouched since WWII (Great Patriotic War, in Russian terms). Windows blown out, broken or gone and rust everywhere. Old planes rusting on the runway. General deterioration everywhere.

A large sign in the front of one of the buildings "Glory to Ukraine!" (in Ukrainian, of course). Had to laugh at that one, if that's their idea of glory. Wish I'd taken a picture to post here.

All I can say is, Sheremetyevo is a modern marvel compared to places like that. The only thing I had a problem with in Moscow is that they turn the lights in the terminal off after 10 PM, and when I arrived I was fumbling in the dark for my bags while being accosted by landshark Taxi drivers. Other than that, it was fine.

I never got to Ukraina, only Moscow. What got me was when I needed to page the rest of my party. It was 500 rubles to page them in Russian, then another 500 rubles to page them in English! Plus I had to bargain for a luggage cart.

    "5 baksov (bucks) for kart!"

    "But it's only got 3 wheels - I'll pay 3."

    "4 wheels costs more!"

I'm just glad I know the language. I can't imagine going there alone and not knowing Russian. They must have a surliness test to work there, by the way. It's one of the strangest places I've ever been ('92 & '93).

The first time we left Moscow in '92, I had a friend take us in his Lada stationwagon around 6am. We got pulled over by the GAI (traffic cops) and shaken down for $10. I'm convinced they look for cars loaded with luggage and routinely pull them down. I figure the taxis already pay them off so they're not pulled over.

    What a town!

The speed limit is 65 in Iowa. I drive 75-80mph on average. 60-65 on the 55mph roads. When I'm going 70 I get run over from being too slow. I go 75-80, I'm usually the faster one, but get passed still occasionally.

    JCN,

I was there in late '93, not long after you. They also tried to charge me to page my waiting party, but before I paid the girl behind the counter (probably the same one that was shaking you down), my meeting party showed up. In between is when the sharks were circling wanting to know if I needed a taxi. Nyet, Spasibo...but they wouldn't take no for an answer and kept following my and my friend around hoping.

The GAI is notorious for pulling cars over, esp. coming to/from the airport, since they know all tourists have money, right?

However, I got by without paying even one bribe, and to this day, I haven't paid one. I just refuse. They're even worse in Ukraine, at the airport (Kiev - Borispil' airport). The only thing that is better, they don't charge for a luggage cart - imagine that! But they have the same problems with slow customs, opening bags (even if you go thru the green 'nothing to declare' channel) and general hassles.

The last time I was there, they hassled me when leaving, because I had slightly over the $1000 limit for the line I was in...hell, it was my f***ing money, not theirs! The guy got angry and shouted, but I stayed cool and told him 'if your lines were better marked, this wouldn't have happened'. Finally he relented when he realized he wasn't gonna get a bribe, and let me through.

Every time you go there, it's something different, a real experience. And not necessarily a good one, either. But I am hoping this year that it will be better, since they got a new president that is adamantly anti-corruption. I'm hoping eventually they eliminate the visa fee for Americans, currently $100 for single entry visas. Since I have to go there this year, I'll see if anything has improved (I doubt it). I have no plans to return to Russia anytime soon, though. That was a one-time deal and very costly, and waste of time. I prefer Ukraine, even with the hassles.

(sorry for the threadjack, yoda... )
