  1. Hi All,

I rip my audiobooks into mp3 for my Sansa. problem is I use Easy CDDA Extractor version 9.x (I guess) and it takes about 10.5 minutes to rip a 65-miniute CD (I have the program settings on max rip speed and priority). Is this the fastest rip available in either freeware or retail apps?

I do not think it is CPU/RAM dependent - bringing up the task manager shows less than 15% of CPU used, and I have lots of physical RAM left.

So those with experience in ripping CDs please share your expertise.

    Thanks, Noki.

I used a free program called CDEx for several years, and it worked well, but when my daughter got an ipod, I had to install itunes on my computer. I set itunes to rip in mp3 format (it defaults to another format that Apple likes), and it rips quite a bit faster than CDEx. It also connects to the internet and fills in the album and tital information automatically, whereas with CDEx, I had to click another button to do that. So itunes is what I use now.

They are pressed retail CDs. I rip to mp3. I'm just looking for a solution that will reduce my rip time. just got the Sansa, and have lots of audiobooks on CD.

    thanks.

Ripping the cd & converting to MP3 are two diff. things.
Programs may do it all in one program but it is still two diff. things.

Ripping should not be dependent on CPU, converting to MP3 will be, as any type of audio or video converting is.

10 minutes a disc.... man.... you've been a member from some time ago but i'm guessing not doing much back in the day if you think 10 minutes is a long time....

Anywho, i use Exact Audio Copy with LAME mp3 converter, rips the disc's very fast, converts to mp3 and deletes the temp wav files, you can set it up to name the mp3 files anyway you want automatically and it's all free.
But it does require a little work & knowledge to set it all up.

  7. Thanks all for your responses. guess I might have been inaccurate in my choice of words. I suppose I should have stated my issue as CONVERTING to mp3 from a pressed audio CD in one shot.

so 10 minutes is pretty much the status quo?? okay, thanks again for your input.

Ripping to a simpler profile will also speed up the rip. For Audiobooks I use 22.5 KHz Mono at 96 KBps and it sounds ok in the car.

Save more disk space and drop to 56K. Its audio and you will not notice it. YOu can even put all of them on one CD (i.e, your cd player will handle mp3 and a layered structure)

I can hear some background at under 96K. Normal - with the mp3 players that I have - is 128K.

    Bad headset???

    Good hearing?

  13. the profile I use in Easy CDDA Extractor is setting #7 VBR (#9 being the worst quality, #1 the best) using the internal mp3 codec (LAme). the total size of the mp3 files (about 18 of 'em) for a typical 65-minute CD is about 120 megs. maybe if I increase the quality (setting #5 or 3) I will have larger files but the time needed to convert to mp3 might decrease. even if i double the file size I would trade that for halving the conversion time (assuming a linear relationship).

CBR encoding will always be quicker. I used to use VBR figuring the computer would figure the best bitrate and my books (from Audible, not CD) were comining in at 90 to 100 KBps, so I switched to CBR 96. Since the content is only voice, 22.5 KHz is fine.

I agree, not only is CBR faster at encoding it is more compatible with players.
I use CDex or WMP to rip.

  16. Thanks olyteddy and moviegeek. have change my converting profile to CBR 64kbps. result is a conversion time of about 5.5 min for a full AudioCD!! about doubled the size of the mp3 files, but that's a trade-off I can live with.

Thanks again for all your help, folks!
