I would like to edit a regular mpeg file with Premiere--but is it not possible to work with compressed files with Premiere? Whenever I press PLAY on the Program side of the window, the video lags; it would be difficult for me to work like this. Is it some kind of setting I have to tweak? I do have a decent computer (if you must know, it is an AMD64 2.2 1 gig of ram)
And also, what codec is best and fastest to use to save/preview video?

Premiere does not support MPEG files. You need to convert it to AVI (DV or huffy codec not DivX or Xvid) first then import the AVI into premiere.
You can use VirtualDub to convert....The distance between genius and insanity is measured only by success... -
Premiere does too support MPEG, just not natively.
Use LSX Encoder (adds import codecs) for pre-PRO versions.
Use MainConcept's plugin for PRO edition.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
