I have a regarding XP PRO. I turned off internet connection by disabling it in network connection a few times. Now the mfffer won't let me connect to the internet at all. I did try the repair IP thingy and it didn't work. Could anyone tell me how I can connect to the net. This is pissing me off to the point that I am going to reinstall WINDOWS 2000 PRO. I haven't activated XP PRO yet, as of today I have 24 days left to register it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Go to Applications, Accessories, Connections and do the connection wizard. I've ran this a few times when XP refuses to conect and it seems to reset it each time.

You can also try removing the network card from the device manager and rebooting. If you're lucky, that will bring it all back.

Are you sure the problem is not with the modem/router? Seems like a stupid question, but one that must be asked. :P

Another thing might be to go into Control Panel -> Network Settings -> Local Area Connection (or what ever it is named) -> Properties

And uninstall (remove) TCP/IP protocol -> reboot -> reinstall TCP/IP protocol.

    Did you reenable the NIC?

    That needs to be done.

    1) Are you getting an IP address assigned from the router?

    2) Can you ping the router?

    3) Can you ping any other machines on your network?

    4) Have you tried a different cable and / or tried a cable from a known working machine?

    5) Did you disable the internet connection or the network connection? These are two different things in XP.

    6) If you're sharing your internet connection through another PC instead of using a router, you may want to look at the connection on that PC and make sure it's still shared. I've seen small office networks where, for some reason the internet connection will stop sharing with the other PCs after a reboot.

got the stupid problem fixed. i did ping the router and the problem seemed to be with windows. after doing a reinstall with windows 2000 pro and not being able to connect with that os too. i checked the mfer cables and the one i was using on that particular pc didn't work. i just picked up a new cat5 cable. i am going to install xp pro again and hopefully i won't have any problems. stay tuned!

    thanks for the reply viral1!

edit: lmfao it doesn't seem to be the cat5 cable either because the new one i just bought doesn't work either. i used another cat5 cable from this pc i am on and it works on the other pc that i was having xp problems. so my conclusion is the linksys router port #3 is dead. i have a 4 port router. sigh

You can always buy a cheap switch and hook it to the uplink port on the router. The router will support up to 253 connections.

XP PRO installed and works flawlessly so far. my port 3 doesn't work on my linksys cable router but nothing lasts forever. i've had this router for 5 years. i'm using port 1 instead and so far so good. thanks again for all the replies, as always it is appreciated.
