You can burn a full dvd in as little as 6 or so minutes if you use the right media
I'd worry much more about quality vs speed, at least thats my opinion.
I've got the Liteon 812s, and its been pretty good- but it likes good quality media. I'm test a NEC 3500 (mad dog 16xdvd9) right now, with the maddog 2.fa firmware and it seems to like my cheap media pretty well... thats great for me.
The recorders I keep seeing people talk about are NEC 3500 series, PIONEER 108 and the BenQ 1620. The benq has a 1620 pro now, but I dont know what the differences are. Pioneer is about to release the 109 model soon, so 108's will likely get cheaper in the coming weeks. and NEC has 3520 and numerous other variations of the 3500 available.
club.cdfreaks.com is a great place to stop by and read too... GOOD LUCKCuban Cigars, Women and Movies.... What a wonderful combination!... I have a web site, and I've seen it... HAVE YOU!?
If you can read this, you do not need glasses -

They probably didn't use the right media or the dvd writer was kept in PIO mode = real slow.

Take a look at the Plextor PX-716, either internal or external. I have one & it's great.

the samsung drive didnt get a great review at cdfreaks.com so I wouldn't go for that one.

The Pioneer DVR-108 is a very good writer from a quality standpoint and doesn't require messing around with a lot of firmware sorting. It may take some extra seconds at 16x compare to some other models but the quality of the burn is what is important. Plextor is still a few firmware updates away from matching its burn quality and media compatibility.
Most places are running out of stock of the DVR-108 because of the 109 arriving. Get one while you can. -
FYI: The Pioneer 109 is going to be available by the end of the month. There are several threads regarding this. Do a quick search or two and check it out.

Assuming Pioneer maintains the write quality and media compatibility of the DVR-108 in the DVR-109, and I hope they do, you are basically getting faster re-write speeds (media not available), DVD-DL (media not available), and faster speed write strategies. Even when the media mentioned becomes available it is going to be expensive. By the time it is affordable the DVR-110 may be out.
I watched the price of the DVR-108 over the past couple weeks. It went up $10-$15 before going out of stock at places like Newegg.
I really do hope the DVR-109 is a great drive. Just be careful.
