I have tried everything I can think of with this one disc. It gets about halfway through VTS_01_2.VOB, then quits with read errors. I have tried DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter, cleaning the disc... none of it works. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Given you were in *that* thread a couple of days ago, obviously you should know (and I'm guessing, have tried) all the methods listed there. Is this on DVDR or a store-bought ?

Maybe try a different DVD drive if possible ?

    smartripper or VOBBlanker ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I have tried four different drives, and they all claim a CRC error (maybe my vision is getting worse, but none of the scratches look that deep). I will try Smartripper next and see how that goes. And no, I don't think *that* thread applies, because this disc was made in 2003 or so.

    All worth trying;
    • All the different ripping tools
SmartRipper, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink to name but a few, and even Cut+Paste in Windows explorer

Cleaning the disc carefully and thoroughly (if the scratches are shallow)

Using toothpaste (if the scratches arent shallow)

Using a different drive (in mates PC if necessary)

      Cleaning the laser lens

Having the disc playing in the background whilst ripping (this slows it down A LOT, but might work)

In DVD Decrypter, have you tried checking the Ignore Read errors box? Under Tools, Settings, I/O on my out of date version. I've managed to rip a DVD that would play but kept failing when ripping by doing that.

Things I have tried so far:

Four different DVD drives (LG GSA-4120B, LG GDR-8163B, a Pioneer DVD±RW, and a Lite-On piece of junk).

Putting the disc through a repair kit no less than seven times.

Smartripper (which I found impossible to worth with anyway), DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter, and AnyDVD.

Given the importance of the disc, this is starting to get a bit frustrating.

  7. Sounds like you are probably going to need to take it back and exhange it if possible.

There is that occassional disc that just wont work. What I could recommend above above the other suggestions, would be to let the ripper cool down and then try it again. What I have done is open 2 sessions of dvddecrypter and then when it got to a bad spot, pop the thing out let it cool , clean the disc and then try again later.

I would ask if it would be possible to rig an external device such as a DVD player to the computer and capture from that source, but that is sounding like more trouble than it was worth.
