Using DVD-R Media -
I have a Lite-On SOHW 812S which burns -R (sometimes) and +R (usually) at up to 8X. However, mostly I burn at 4X although I'm burning more 8X as the media becomes more common. I lucked out when I got my new computer - they ran out of the 4X drive I paid for and went to an 8X for free.
However, I would go to a 12X or 16X drive right now. Although finding media that fast is nearly impossible right now, it's only a matter of time and it's much easier to downgrade media than upgrade a drive. Good 12X and 16X drives don't sell for a great deal more than 8X drives do.
I haven't made up my mind about DLI certainly don't plan to upgrade immediately, and the media is still very expensive, so I don't see any use for it.

plextor 708A is a 4x burner but it can burn 4x DVD+R media @ 8x speed. 4x DVD-R/+ media takes 15 minutes & the 8x speed for only DVD+R media takes 8 minutes.
pioneer 107D is a 8x burner. 4x speed media takes 15 minutes and 8x media takes 8 minutes. -

speed? 16X I believe.. but the media I use is only 4X (memorex dvd+/-R
and RW) all 15 minutes if full.scratch the surface off a cynic - you will find a disillusioned idealist. -
Since this has to do with speed. I dont want to bother anyone but when dealing with a dvd-rw that is 1x or 2x how long does that take? I saw someone say 4x takes 15 mins on there dvd burner. So i take it 2x would be 30 mins.

Ahhh good to hear. =)
Well im on the look out for a dvd-rw that handles 4x. I only checked out http://www.bestbuy.ca
BTW since i hear of speed changes when burning using a dvd-r would that also include the dvd-rw? -
i have various 2x to 16x burners, but the most often used speed I use is 4x DVD-R for DVD-Video discs, 3x for -RAM discs, and 8x for data DVD-R discs (files, avi crap etc).
My burner of choice: LG GSA-series writers.
Media of choice: Ritek G04 for DVD-Video, Ritek G05 for data DVD-R, Maxell ver.2.1 for -RAM.
My suggestion to you: buy at least 8x multiformat writer. In a half year time 8x media should cost same as 4x media costs now. Dont buy any extended warranty etc crap, because you will buy another writer before it expires -
My 811, 832, and 2500 burn some at 4X, some at 8X. My 411@411 will do 4X, period.
A friend just bought a NEC 3500, 16X, and with Memorex printables, I don't know if these are coming up Media Code RicohJPN, or his others, but he is getting 12X burns with whichever they are. And he's had these disks for several, months, so they are not the "new batch" improved models.
Cheers,
