Hey guys, I need help on creating a DVD. Firstly, I'm not even 100% sure if this is the right forum. If it isn't, Mods please move it.

Secondly, I know that you don't want stupid/repetetive questions that have already been answered around the site or in the forums. And I know I'm supposed to search around first to get my answer. But believe me I really did try and because of the extremelyh overwhelming amount of information available on this site I only got more and more confused. I hope you understand and bare with me here. And if this is a repetative post or a really simple question that has been answered before, I completely understand if you're angry/impatient at newbies like me... so just ignore my thread...
Anyways, to those that would like to help me, here's my problem:

I downloaded Greece vs France (Euro2004). There are two files, one for the first half, and one for the 2nd half. The files are .avi files and they have great quality. The problem is that they are 368 x 272 (1st half file) and 336 x 256 (2nd half file) and when I wanna import them to Adobe Encore 1.0 to create a DVD, Encore won't let me since it only accepts videos with a resolution of 720 x 480, 720 x 486, or 704 x 880. So I tried using TMPGEnc DVD Source Creator in order to upsize the two files so I can import them to Encore. But the program didn't work at all. Firstly it took forever to convert (24+ hours) second the outcome was terrible, no sound and the video quality was reduced and it ran slower.
I also tried using Sonic to create a DVD but it didn't work as well. Everytime I tried importing the video files, the program froze.

Does anyone know what I should do, what programs to use, etc. so I can make this DVD?

Thanks a lot in advance guys, I really do appreciate any help. Once again, I'm sorry if this has been answered before, please forgive my ignorance.

    Regards

Yep, check the guides in the convert section that bugster so elegantly directed you to. With the resolutions you've given, I'd suggest using 352 * 240 (for NTSC) or 352 * 288 (for PAL) when you do the conversion. These are valid DVD resolutions, and if Adobe Encore doesn't accept them as such, don't use it !
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hey guys

    thanks for the replies

I followed this guide: http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm right upto the end of step 2, but when I click on Start in TMPGEnc, it says "Can't load P3PPackage.dll" and it doesn't start the conversion

What does this mean? And what should I do?

    Thanks

Hard to say exactly, because it depends a lot on the settings you used, but 2-Pass VBR should take roughly 3X-4X the runtime, so I'd say around 3-3.5 hours. CBR about half that.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    holy cow

Are you running noise removal filters or something ?

Stop the current encode, then take screenshots of each of the settings windows and post them here, because something is wrong.
    If in doubt, Google it.

2 1/2hrs of video only took 19 hrs on an AMD 650!

    Same 2 1/2 hrs took 5 hours on a P4 1.8G

type [ img ]filename.ext[ img ] (without the spaces in the img tags) and you can't have any spaces in the filenames either.
    If in doubt, Google it.

OK, just looked at https://www.videohelp.com/forum/images/guides/p1140785/untitled.jpg and the first thing I'll say is you've got the stream type (in the bottom right) set to System (Video only). This should be set to ES (Video only). When I said settings, I actually meant when you hit the settings button, and you get the three tabs of settings. Also, you're encoding to 720 X 576, which IMO won't look real good because of the resolution of the source files, and the bitrate is too high also.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Cool !

    OK. On the Video tab:

    Change the size to 352 X 288.
Change the Rate Control Mode to CBR.
    Change the Bitrate to 2000.
Change the Motion Search Precision to Motion Estimate Search (fast).

Once out of the settings, go to Option > Task priority, and set both when active and when idle to High Priority.

That should speed things up a bit
    If in doubt, Google it.

In my encodes of tv shows (after an IVTC) for a 43 min show takes me
    about 1:40 minutes (1hr/40mn) to encode at 720 x 480 (no filters)
avi source. (trueth be told, I'm operating under "tweak" conditions
for my projects, but i'm using high bitrates such as 9000 and CBR)

But, in a last few encodes I have ben doing, they were encoding at aprox
    1:15 minutes
So, I don't know what's going on (yet) but I'm still debuggin this phenomina.

    (
.. By the way, IVTC (for film-only sources) it speeds up dramatically,
    .. the encode project.
    )

And, remember.. when you hear people posting their encoding speeds, do
bare in mind the their resolution is problably 352 x 480 or less. I'm
talking about 720 x 480 (at least in my encodes) projects.

My cpu is an XP 1800+ under win 98 gold.

well after about 2 hours of encoding there was a message that said "Invalid point Operation".
And the quality of the video is reduced (it runs slower)

    These sound like divX files

In any event.. you might have to find the suspecting *frame* and delete
it first. But then agin, if it is a divX as I suspect, it might be that there are
    some bad frames in there.

I think there is app util that parses through and fix'es divX files. I just
    don't remember the name.
Have a look in the Tools section for anything related to divX and AVI files.

divfix I think is the one you need. Or Virtualdub can do it also.
