    Is there any kind of dvd player that is made that can be hooked up to a computer so you can upload new codecs to it? And if not, is there a particular reason that players like that arn't made? It just seems that if they were you wouldn't even need to sell it with DVD playback in it all ready, so you wouldn't have to pay the liscenseing fees to the DVD people. And you could get it to play DVDs,Divx,RM,WMV... without having to pay anyone for it.

    Hello,

    I know some standalone dvd players let you upgrade the FIRMWARE. That's the information the dvd player needs to know what dvds are (kind of a simplified explanation, that's what I know it as).

    Your best bet would be to get a divx dvd player. Many are under $100USD. I don't believe any play wmv...

    You could make your own with a computer dvdrom and a video card....
