Please can you tell me how to change the codec on my .avi files so I can solve the following problem

    This is getting really annoying.

I have a fujifilm f31fd digital camer that can make nice video avi files only cant edit them as windows movie maker, and several others have crashed when I tried to add the files to edit them.

AVS remaker and editor wont crash but all I got was the tell tale sign of codec probs in that you only get sound with a balck screen. Yet the ffdshow codec the avi files appear to need IS installed.

Also I have a canon a75 camer and the video files from it (.avi again) will load into the avs video editor programs but I cant thenm load the fuji .avi files in with them for editing as it says diff frame rate and other problems.

How can I edit my fuji film camera .avi files with themselves, with other video files and with my cannon camera files please then set them up so I can send them to friends who wont have codec problems if theydont have ffdshow installed

Try playing with VLC. That may tell you if you have codec problems as it uses it's own codecs. WMP is fairly limited as a editor. You might try VirtualDub instead. You can also drop the file into Gspot to identify the codec it's using.

To change the codec, you re-encode the video with a different codec. VDub can do that also if that's what you want. This will reduce the quality.

  4. PicVideo MJPEG Codec. Or, newer versions of VirtualDub have an MJPEG decoder built in.

FFDShow has a vfw mjpeg codec as well, I believe.

  6. Sometimes camera manufacturers use MJPEG but specify an unusual 'fourcc' code in the AVI file. The usual code is MJPG but it might be something like CJPG (I've seen that used with Canon files).

With traditional VfW codecs, you can either make a similar registry edit or, with a hex editor, change it in the AVI file itself.

Have you tried Gspot to see what fourcc is in the AVI header?
