Click on "Edit" to your left, there's a guide to explain the process.

Ok, I'm off and running but need help with one more thing. There's a great guide on splitting an .avi in 2 using v dub, but I'd like to split my hour .avis in 3 so I can back'm up on DVDs. I can divide the total frames in 3, but how do I save as .avi from one plave to the other?

I do realize that somewhere in the splitting in 2 guide is the answer, but he uses a bunch of shortcuts, so it's hard to figure out. I guess the question is how do I say "start at this frame, end at this frame, and save as .avi?

  10. You can manually set the range under Video -> Select Range, or you can position the frame slider and use the mark-in and mark-out buttons at the bottom of the window. Be sure to use Direct Stream Copy for both Video and Audio. Then use File -> Save as AVI.

Do people usually not back up .avis on DVD?
I don't know how long the tapes last...hardrives can crash....I don't know how long DVDs last either, but I'd imagine (not sure why I'd imagine this) longer than tapes or harddrives - plus, after 5 years or so, I can just copy these to fresh DVDs (eventually, I'll probably able to get lots of hours on a DVD - or blueray or whatever).

Ok, I'll ask this another way:

What's the best way to back up .avis - leaving them as such - besides on you hard drive and the original tape?

  15. I have lots of AVI files backed up on ISO format DVDs. Before I had a DVD writer I backed them up on CDs.
