  1. Hi everybody

My problem is I have a Yamaha DSP A595 amp which is great for 5.1 dvd's, but when I listen to older (classic) movies, the majority of which are in 1.0 mono or 2.0 mono, I am only getting sound from the centre or the two mains. My amp only does DD, DPL, and a handful of DSP modes, (no DPLII, no Neo6, no CSII) of which, Mono Movie is supposed to be for the "oldies", but I don't like it as it creates a lot of reverb and echo. If I turn it down, there is no effect at all.
I suppose what I'm really asking is, is there any other way of enhancing mono soundtracks so that they sound more "acceptably" surround? or even pseudo? I hate listening to a movie through the centre channel alone.
Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can give.

    Hello,

Does your dvd player support virtual surround?? My sony does (I do have a 5.1 receiver but sometimes I've used virtual). It's acceptable. I haven't tried it for mono movies but you might look into it.

EDIT - If you have a dvd burner you could edit it. Rip it to the harddrive. Than extract the soundfiles with besweet. From there you could use any sound editor and "clone" the one channel sound. That should make a fake stereo signal (fake in that its the same signal in left and right but it would show up in both channels). Worth a try.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  3. Thanks for your fast replies.

Unfortunately no Virtual Surround on dvd player.

Never used BeSweet but I'll give it a go. How would I go about matching up the video and audio after I have edited them though?

    Hello,

For synching you could just use tmpgenc or tmpgenc dvd author (or another authoring program).

There shouldn't be any issues since your using the source sound. But programs like virtualdub have a sync feature to them (unfortunately virtualdub only converts to avi which would then require a dvd authoring program that accepts avi - since dvd is mpeg2).

  6. Okay, I have ripped dvd to hard drive with Dvd Decrypter.
Ripped audio soundtrack with Dvd Audio Ripper.
Created and Edited 6 Mono sountracks in Vegas 4.0
    Now what?

When I save my newly edited tracks they become a Vegas File!
How do I export these elsewhere?
And how do I join them with the ripped vobs from the dvd to create -a new dvd sountrack, so I can burn to a blank with my dvd writer?

Hope this is feasible. If not, please bear with me as I'm only a newbie to all this and am trying my best.

In vegas you need to go File -> Render As, then select an audio output type. If you can, go AC-3
