  1. I have loads of mpg files that have been playing fine. They are now causing WMP9 to stop responding, saying error downloading codec when played, .avi are fine. The only thing that has been installed is TMPGEnc 3 Express. I've tried installing a few codecs, but this has not helped.

    Any ideas,

    Thanks

I would try another player. Zoom Player or VLC Media Player will surely work better than WMP9. (IMO almost anything would)

Try AVIcodec. It should tell you what codecs you have and what you need.

  3. Cheers, I'll give it a try. One thing I have noticed, the .mpg files were converted from avi, which are ok, maybe that has something to do with it.

On another note, how many codecs do I need installed, I cuurrently have the following. Just wondering if I have a little overkill

    AC3 Filter
    DivX Pro
    XviD
    AC-3 ACM decompressor
    AVI codec

    Cheers

Sounds like your MPEG codec might be screwed up. Do you have/are you able to reinstall PowerDVD or WinDVD ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Ok, I reinstalled PowerDVD, which made no difference. when I lauch the .mpg, wmp starts to play and i noticed the message 'error downloading codec', it and then locks up after playing the film after a few seconds and you can't forward the film.

I installed zoomplayer, which doesn't lockup, you can forward the movie, but the video seems to pause inetrmittently, but the audio continues. You can then forward the movie and it will continue, with the same pause in video..

WMP9 defaults to "automatically download codecs" in its settings.

If it was a TMPGEnc Express install that caused it, have you tried uninstalling it ?
    If in doubt, Google it.
