Home users that have their preferences set to receive operating-system updates as they are made available by Microsoft may be surprised to learn that some of the software they already run on their systems could be disabled by SP2 or may run very differently.

Many of the programs on Microsoft's list of problems will affect enterprise users for the most part. However, a big group of computer games, including a range of those made by Atari, are affected. In addition, the update can interfere with the operation of several popular antivirus programs -- including those made by McAfee and Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC - news).

    Be careful!!

I heard that SP2 will turn Windows Firewall ON by default. And if the firewall is disabled, windows will keep nagging you until you turn it on again.

This will be a problem for me as im connected to the internet through a router (Netgear). The router has its own hardware firewall (always on by default, no option to turn off) so there will be conflict with the windows firewall. i mey even be left without a internet connection.

Guess i wont be updating to SP2.

    No.

    It's not a problem.

I am connected through a router with a hardware firewall.

Even with the firewall on, I still was on the net.

I turned off the windows firewall though.

If you turn off the security center, then it will not nag you to turn the firewall back on.

  7. running a hardware and software firewall wont cause you to drop connection. The software firewall with notify you if there are outgoing connections that you do not know are occuring. Unlike a hardware firewall they do not block all connection outgoing from your PC that seem legit but could be suspicious activity ie work trojan ext.

The SP2 upgrade went "almost" smoothly for me. Here are my random thoughts:

    1) Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 would not load after SP2 was installed. I had to uninstall other software that had installed 3rd party codecs, until PP would load. Apparently SP2 rearranges the priority of the audio and video codecs in some fashion and PP is very sensitive to codec priority. Thanks to the Adobe PP forum for the tip. This problem is obviously PC configuration specific and not a fault of PP or SP2.
    2) The SP2 popup blocker is great.
    3) The SP2 DEP (Data Execution Prevention) security upgrade didn't cause me any problems, but various Internet forums have threads about this problem. It's easy to turn DEP off, either for all non executables, or program by program. If your favorite program doesn't run, XP will display an error message about memory violation, etc.
    4) You now get the official version of DirectX 9.0C, for what it's worth.
    5) I also uninstalled McAfee Firewall, since there is no need for it.

I tested it with my programs first b4 I installed it on my two computers.

I used it on a test machine.

The only problem I have is that when I wake my computer up for hiberation, I get a warning "limited or no connectivity to network" The only way to fix this is to pull the modem out of my laptop.

A friend of mine can't even install SP2, his 100% legal copy of XP Pro will no longer connect to the domain after running any updates in the v5 updater.

SP2 (from all the feedback) seems to be a huge danger to the stuff that is already in the PC. MS chose a simple, sledgehammer approach, "kill'em all and we have no problem". All those companies that laudly demanded that MS fixes things beware. You got what you wanted. Looks like WinXP will be the last man standing (haven't they just invented a new way of eliminating competition?) Watch out, if they missed you with SP2 they will get you with SP3.
