  1. ok all, i'm new here looks like a great board!

this may be a very simple process and i may be unaware of certain terminology, but basically i want to convert the movie i took on my Kodak camera to AVI! OR----whatever it is i convert it to to make it smaller, compressed to upload to my limited server space.

i have several movies i want to do but one in particular is 14 megs and about 30 seconds long!

what program do i use to convert it or is it possible to make it any smaller? thx,jw

    Welcome aboard jwgeetar!

What format is it in now? You'll need a format you can open with an editing app.

Check out the tools section (under "Lists" along the left) for file converters and see if there isn't one that will do the trick

  3. thanks capmaster. the only format i can think of is that it is a quicktime movie. thats all it says when i d-load the movies off my camera.

also. i did check out the converter's and came up with the Bink Converter. it's pretty easy to work with but i could not get my file converted to a compressed state.

just wondering if you or someone here knew of one that worked! thx,jw

If it is a QuickTime format, you should be able to get QuickTime Pro and export the movie to MPEG 4. For example, my HP camera makes 30-second 320x240 20fps AVI movies of about 6 MB each. They are under 4 MB when exported to MPEG 4.

  5. on a pc i use the QTreader.vfp plugin for tmpegenc
then encode the quicktime movie to say about a 4 gig mpeg2 (for a 2hour film) takes a couple of hours

    now you have an mpeg2
i treat it in the same way as a vob of a dvd

lots of ways from mpeg2 to avi personally
i extract the audio from the mpeg 2 using dvd2avi
compress the audio using besweet or cdex
    get aspect ratio using flaskmpeg
encode the mpeg2 using virtualdub (need to use avi synth to get it to accept the mpeg2)

dont know how this will help with a mac
does tmpeg work on a mac if so you should be able to get the mpeg2 out of it

yep you are in the wrong area

although quicktime is apple, conversions are platform specific

to come to the mac form means you have a mac and are asing how to do that on a mac

im moving you to the proper area

  9. Here is my way. Load it into TMPGEnc via QTreader.vfp. Set up as an MPEG-2. Save it as a project. DOn't start encoding. Load the project into a program called VFAPI. That can be found here http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/SupportUtils/VFAPIConv-1.05-EN.zip. Load the new file in virtualdub. Encode with what ever codec you want. I recomend XVID.
This plan is so bad, it must be one of ours.

i will try that VFAPI program next time i want to go quicktime to avi
does it create an mpeg2 file or does it just allow the original quicktime file to be read by virtual dub [much like avi synth allows you to read mpeg2 and vobs]
