I just noticed alot of people talking about having a higher compression is better and so on
but I'm new to this and I let the program choose automatic for what is the best and I get a wide range but usually around 50% but thats regarding a used movies and so on
but when I watch them to check to see if the burn was good .........they look fine
more than half the time I am burning dvds borrowed that have been scratched pretty bad......and they seem to look newish
is it just me? or what?

When you state
more than half the time I am burning dvds borrowed
What's important is that you're satisfied with your backups. As a rule, if a backup of mine requires any compression, I attempt to negate or minimize it. Usually that entails removing unwanted audio/subpicture streams, using re-author to backup the main movie only, and sometimes trimming the start/stop points. However, if you're happy with your backups @ whatever percentage of compression, what else matters? If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter.

I know a couple of people whose setups require Deep Analysis and > 85% each time. One of my mates has a projector set up and anything less than this results in fuzzy video. The exact same DVDs on his TV are fine.
I do think some people are a bit anal about quality though. If in doubt, Google it. -
yeah their backups of owned ones so I dont kill the originals
I like to keep everything on the disc........like the original -
myself i like to have an axact copy of the original with the bonus material and all as i figure its a backup so if the quality is down a litle who really cares. its not like your buying it for $30. the onlt stuff i remove is all audio streams apart from the main audio stream and any trailers or advertising material. unless the movie is round 3 hours long then you need to remove all apart from the movie. your other option is always to split the dvd to two disc's movie on one and extras on the other.
