Should I Get a 8 X DVD Burner ?

I'm just wondering if I should buy a 8 X DVD Burner, what media will write at 8X and work well for movies ?

I got a 4X LG burner already but should I get a 8X LG Burner to, I haven't seen any media that say 8 X on them ?

it depends...burning faster sometimes makes the disc incompatible with some dvd players cause the pits arent deep enough, and thens theres away the chance of buffer underun when burning fast. that equals a coaster.

also, dont get dual layer. the only DualLayer availible out there are DVD+R, which only works with 88% of the DVD players out there, while DVD-R works with 93%. that small % is all it takes to ruin your hard work. imagine after burning the disc, you find that your dvd player doesnt support it. or you send the disc to family and friends for christmas/whatever, and they cant play it on their standalone cause its a DVD+R. both the PS2 and XBOX do not play DVD+Rs, only DVD-Rs.

the final decision on 8x or not is your choice.

choirislife923 you quote is not true, for the PS2 it depends on which model you have if it plays +R's or -R's some model's play both(mine play some -R's but loves +R's). You can get an 8x dual format burner with +DL support for under $100 right now.

If you want to go with a hacked firmware, you can get an NEC or Lite On 8x dual format burner that can use a hacked firmware to burn to +DL discs for ~$70-$75.

But......

Since you already have a 4x LG burner, there is no need to replace it with an 8x unit. If you need to add an addition, then go for it. From experience, 8x burning isn't all it's cracked up to be. It isn't a true 8x burn, it starts at 4x, then around 25% switches to 6x, then later on, switches again to 8x. Total burn time is just under 10minutes for a full disc. Also some media will have problems at the speed switches. These problems can be seen on the media itself, and some will cause a stutter/skip in older, less forgiving set top players.

Most drives will write 4x Taiyo Yuden and 4x Verbatim discs at 8x. Carefull with the verbatims, they are made in 3 factories, and each produces different results. Depending on the drive, most other 4x media will burn at either 6x or 4x.

Most drives will write most Ricoh +R discs at either 6x or 8x.

Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Maxell make 8x DVD-R media that is widely available. Ricoh, Verbatim, Optodisc, Prodisc, and Taiyo Yuden are some makers of certified 8x DVD+R discs.


BTW, I have 4 PS2s, 2 play DVD+R, 2 do not, but they all play DVD-R and DVD+R with a ROM book type.

15 min @ 4X (mine have really been 12mins)
8 min @ 8X (8 mins and a few seconds)
6 min @ 12x (6min and a few seconds)

So does time really matter, if you need a 8X burner or not

Where I live, 8x blanks are scarce. I would stick with your 4x burner.

Get a 12x, with DL. (LG makes one, not sure on the US release date) It sounds like one helluva burner.

to be honest, i am biased. i feel that the DVD-R coalition is better than the +R. it seems as if the DVD+R coalition is backed by the evil monopolies of electronics that just add a little peperika into their current products and remarket them. Take sony for example...how many versions of the walkman are there?

dvd-r on the other hand, are electronic companies which seem to be inventing instead of innovating. pioneer, 1st to arrive with LaserDisc, and now DVD-R.

These statistics may, or may not, hold true for SL dvd media. I'm leaning more to may not, because with bitsetting DVD+r is quite compatible, it might have just under the compatibility as DVd-r, if not the same.
But this is all a moot point if we are talking about DVDr DL. We have no evidence to suggest either way, at least no empirical evidence. DVD+r DL is scarcely available, and DVD-r DL hasn't even been released yet. So as far as we know, the compatibility rate is probably below that of SL media.
