  1. will this produce better results using 2-pass (which takes 12 hours) better than dvdshrink, instantcopy, etc.?

and is it normal that 2-pass takes 12 hours on my 800mhz amd duron, with 320 sdram?

is there any big quality difference between 2 passes and 4 passes?

  2. First, the difference between 2 and 4 pass: It all depends, you will get varying answers, it partly depends on the equipment you play it on, and also on your eyesight, and what you find to be acceptable.

About the differences with transcoders: I find it makes a huge difference with large movies, I got artifacts using dvdshrink and such with the last samurai, and with master and commander, but got zero with cce in conjunction with dvd-rb. But there are certain instances where transcoders work better. If time is a concern, go with a transcoder. Also if it is animation, like anime, a transcoder may work better, I have gotten some crappy encodes becomes I didn't know how to do a proper custom setup with cce and dvd-rb. For more discussion on this, there are several threads on this topic over at doom9 forums.
    Blah, blah, blah

that time sounds about right for a Duron and only 320 sdram

Sound about right, you know there ARE some pretty cheap upgrades out there right now right?

  7. I have tried this on a few backups using CCE with 3 pass and I am very impressed with the results. A one click program well worth looking into. I cant wait till all the bugs are worked out.

  8. CCE backup is the ONLY alternative for backin up long movies to 1 dvdr, it will always be better than dvdshrink. What do you think we used before shrink hit the net? And its still the best. Your PC is old/slow but 12 hours is still faster than tmpgenc users can expect from much faster cpus, i kinda doubt my XP2100 can do it faster with tmpgenc. CCE like big memory, 320 may be a little low but the difference would not be very noticeable with 512 megs. Your problem is probably more the SDRAM than the 320MB.
