OK, confused a bit here..
I had an 84 minute DivX I wanted to try to SVCD...
So I did, and I used a low bitrate (900 I think..) and got the file size down to 664 meg.. Not bad.. Make an SVCD..
Pop it into my DVD player.. Nothing..
Ok, no surprise, mine doesn't say it does SVCDs, just VCDs..
So, I figure I'll try the header trick..
I pull up TMPeg Plus 2.5, use the VCD Header trick, convert and..
840 meg file???? WHAT?
What kind of header is almost 200 meg??
So, I try it again with VCD standard (first try was VCD non-standard)..
Same thing.. MUCH BIGGER file...
So, am I missing something, or is the header trick only supposed to change the header??
Any explanations would be appreciated...
Thanx

Although I can't explain WHY that happens, I would split the avi into two files and burn SVCD at a much higher bitrate to maintain some quality.
A 900kbps SVCD is going to be almost unwatchable, way worse than VCD (1150kbps).Cheers, Jim

The point is his player does not play SVCD, only VCD. YOu could try modifying the VCD template to 352X480 MPEG-1 and encoding at 2200 kbps as a non-standard VCD. Or you could simply encode as a VCD MPEG-1 352X240 nosn-standard, but up the bitrate to 1600 kbps to get excellent quality. On small TV's (19" and smaller), you usually cannot tell the difference between a well authored VCD and SVCD/CVD other than the fact you can get the movie on one disk!

I'm trying what you suggested using Nero.. I'll see what happens..
(UPDATE.. Didn't work.. It burned OK, but doesn't play. I looked at the resulting files on the CD. They both look the same in TMpegenc tools. Except for the bitrates. But only the smaller one (higher bitrate) plays on the DVD player. Both files play in PowerDVD.)

p.s. The file before conversion is (according to TMPeg):
MPEG-2 Program (VBR)
MPEG-2 Video 480x480 29.97fps 950kbps
MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 44100Hz 224kbps
Those are the exact same specs of the smaller file that worked, except it's video bitrate is 2000kbps.
