I have a Athlon XP 2400+, and the cpu temp is @ 35C and the case temp runs between 70F and 85F. My question is, is that too hot??

Actually, that is fairly cool, about 95F. About 160F would be getting a little hot. Don't know your fan setup, but I would recommend a front intake and a rear exhaust fan. Ball bearing fans are preferred. You should have sockets on the MB for them. If you don't, then go for a fan that plugs into the 4 pin power cable from the PS.

I have four fans, 2 in the back, 1 on top and 1 on the side that are all outbound to keep dust out. I think the problem was the new heatsink fan I used. It was alot larger and had a lower RPM than the one I had before.

I agree with redwudz that you don't have a temperature problem (yet). My CPU and case temp are low-mid 30C. I would not recommend all fans pushing out. The idea is to draw cooler air into the case and exhaust warmer air out. Typically the front fan or side fan pulls air in. The top and rear push it out.

What if the cpu is running at 40C-50C when idle, is that bad?

I thought it was better to keep air flow equal, i.e. I have 4 fans, 2-in and 2-out. If you have all 4 fans going out, will that not create negative air pressure in the case?

HateTheGame: My XP2500 Barton's idle temp is 43C after about 3 hours of running. Full load gets up to 53C-55C. The case temp is 34C. I have one front intake fan with filter and 2 rear exhaust, not counting the PS fan. According to AMD, max CPU temp should be 85C or less under load for 2100 and up processors. If all your fans are blowing outward, you are probably only getting air through the cracks in the case and your PS is starved for cooling air. Set your front fan as intake and put a filter on it if dust is a big concern and your case and CPU temp will probably go down a little.
EDIT: It also depends on where the case temp is being taken. The MB temp reading is not usually the same as the true air temp in the case.

i'd be happy to see temps that low! i see 55C idle on my XP2000 and about 37C case temp. under full load i sometimes see 63CPU and up to 41C case temp. i've never had any problems, but i will be installing some new fans.....

Having positive pressure inside the case (more fans in than out) should mean more even temps inside, and should be less noisy too - air being drawn through cracks between cd drives and past PCI cards can cause whistling and vibration - very annoying!

  9. Mine runs at 60 degrees C idle, no problems.
