I just got a new PC (Dell w/Vista......BIG MISTAKE). Downloaded Core Temp 0.96. One core is always 10-15 degrees C cooler than the other. Is this normal? Or is this the quirk in a freeware program?

They will generally indicate different temperatures for each core. Mine usually vary by maybe a few degrees C. But you may also have a software program running that's just using one core more than the other and you may be seeing that.
But I haven't seen very reliable readings from most temperature programs. I have a couple of programs that show a -10C and 25,000 RPM on the CPU fan.
It's unlikely in normal use with both cores sharing a similar load that they would vary too much from each other.
The ones that come with the motherboard or the ones that show temperatures in BIOS are usually more accurate. Even the BIOS ones are not always a good indicator, because when the motherboard drivers are in use after boot, they can control the CPU fan speed and often the CPU multipliers and let the CPU run cooler than in BIOS.
More important, what are the maximum temperatures shown? And what CPU does the computer use? -
Thanks for the quick reply. I have not done anything heavy duty like encoding DVD's, But I have run several apps at one time and the temp has not exceeded 45C.

Also it is always the 2nd Core (core 1 as opposed to core 0) that is the hottest.

CPU is Athlon 64 X2 4000+. Sorry I wasn't as specific as most people I deal with were.
