  1. i dont post often due to the amount of guides i can find here.i'm very new to the dvd burning scene, and have alot of avi movies.i created a dvd from an avi which looked pretty good, but not as good as the original i dont think...anyway after doing this and readin alot of you guys dont fool with avi to dvd,i'm wondering if you guys prefer to make avi's to svcd's on dvd instead of avi to dvd???i'm not sure there would be a huge loss in quality but want some other advice on it,,i know i could play around with it for a few days but would appreciate some time saving advice on the matter,,,thanks in advance

I've never seen this phrase on this site before.

    You get my respect.

    Anyhow, "AVI" says nothing.
What's int he AVI? Uncompressed, divx, etc?

The resolution is also important, and the bitrate used ei. how good is the quality?
If the avi files have near DVD resolution (720x576 for PAL) and the quality is decent, personally i would encode it to DVD, maybe add some filtering through fx virtualDub and frameserve to tmpgenc.
But thats me, others might say that 1/2 DVD is enough for the same avi's.

The only time it makes sense to do SVCD on DVD is when you already have the movie in question in SVCD format ONLY. If you have avi and the quality is suspect, use 1/2 D1 (352 * 480/576) resolution and low-ish bitrates (2000 - 4000 Kbps). This should allow you to fit two average length movies on one DVD. As ChrO says, the resolution and bitrate of the source divx are very important in determining the final quality.

As a rough guide, for a 90 minute movie in divx encoded to Mpeg 2 with TmpGenc:-

1 CD divx (700Mb) 1/2 D1, CQ mode, low bitrate, two movies per DVD with some space left over for extras or maybe even 3 movies)

2 CD divx (1400Mb) Full D1, CQ or 2-pass VBR dependsing on mivie type and how I feel that day ( )

3 CD divx (2100Mb). Full D1, use a bitrate calculator to get AVG bitrate and use 2-pass VBR, motion search high (never highest).

    Hope this helps.

  6. thanks for the input guys,,oh and would yall happen to know if this((1 CD divx (700Mb) 1/2 D1, CQ mode, low bitrate, two movies per DVD with some space left over for extras or maybe even 3 movies)) is possible through ulead video,,i use it but the settings seem very limited, the last time i used tmpge it told me a svcd out of a 670mb low motion divx3 was gonna be like 5 gigs
