  1. This may be a very simple question for someone out there. I’m currently working on creating DVD’s from my Hi8 home moves from the last 12 years. As I capture segments of video, I run through an editing process, adding titles, transitions, trimming etc, and then I use TmpGenc to encode to Mpeg and finally DVD-lab for authoring the DVD. The DVD usually consists of a main menu, which will play each of about 8 clips (titles) with sub menus to optionally select chapters from each clip. Now as I go through this process I eventually have to clean up my hard drive and delete my capture avi’s and my mpeg’s to make room for more. This always worries me due to the amount of work I put into the editing as I won’t be able to recreate the edited Mpeg. Anyway, if I’m happing with the final DVD this should be OK. My question is though, if I decide in the future to create a new DVD by combining clips from different DVD’s that I’ve created, how do I get back to the original MPEG clips by reading the vobs on the DVD, is there an easy way to dissect them down to the separate movie clips and then start a new DVD authoring project in DVD-Lab?

  2. 1) create folders on your desktop
    2) open DVD you created in DVDdecrypter
    3) select the VOB files you want to convert back to MPG2
    4) Open vob file one @ a time in TMPGEnc
    5) encode and save as mpg2 (don't forget to select which bitrate you want this is important if you are trying to fit multible files on 1 DVD)
    6) put re-encode files into separate folders created for tracking
    7) bear in mind that encoding back to MPG2 take some time..

    good luck

Also bear in mind that it is completely unnecessary, stupid, and reduces
quality to re-encode video that is already in MPEG2 format.
Doing the VOBs one at a time is also not wise . The authoring
process divided your video arbitrarily into VOBs

All you have to do is demux the VOBs into video and audio
and then re-mux them into a MPEG2 ....if you want an MPEG2

It's even easier to use an authoring program that can select sections
    directly from a VOB set

  5. OK, I think FOO's reply is getting to the heart of what I'm trying to do. I kinda guessed I didn't need to re-encode (I have limited understanding of what VOB's really are). As the authoring process arbitrarily divided my mpgs into VOB's I just want to be able to split and join them back to files that are my original movie clips. Then I can author a new DVD from some or all of them combined with other clips in mpg format (new or otherwise). So... what tool will allow me to do this?

  6. imgtools will allow you to "extract" the mpegs out of the vobs.

Cant remember if I have ever tried this, but you may be able to simply rename the vob's to mpg's (kinda like a .dat to a .mpg). It may cause some problems though.

    2. You only need to use DVD Decrypter on DVDs that have 'Copy Protection' on them because 'why?', you could just 'copy' the files to your hard without it. Try it sometime, ok. You will see for yourself. On DVDs we create ourselves there is no 'copy protection' so DVD Decrypter is 'NOT' needed.

    4. Yea, open the vobs in TMPGEnc MPEG Tools DeMultiplex, not the main window or the wizard. Read Foo's post.
    5. Again, Read Foo's post.
